About Gebenbach Kirwa
Gebenbach Kirwa — edition 2026
The Gebenbach Kirwa traditionally takes place on the weekend before Pentecost. As Pentecost 2026 falls on May 24th, the Kirwa will be celebrated on the preceding weekend, May 16th to 18th – a special year, as the Kirwa marks its 50th anniversary.
As usual, the Kirwaburschen will fetch the Kirwabaum from the Gebenbach church woods, the Moidln will decorate it with blue and white ribbons, and then it will be erected on the festival grounds in the parish garden. The highlight is the tree dancing on Sunday afternoon with waltzes, Sternpolka, and Zwiefache until the Oberkirwapaar is determined. The festival is organized by KLJB Gebenbach and the Kirwapaare. The detailed program for the anniversary will be announced shortly before the Kirwa.

Upper Palatinate customs in their purest form
The Kirwa is part of the intangible cultural heritage of the Upper Palatinate – and Gebenbach in the Amberg-Sulzbach district cultivates it with particular dedication. The festival is celebrated in the parish garden, traditionally on the weekend before Pentecost. The festival is organized by KLJB Gebenbach together with the Kirwapaare (Kirwa couples), who rehearse for weeks.
From the church woods to the tree dancing
The Kirwaburschen fetch the Kirwabaum from the Gebenbach church woods. After the Moidln have decorated it with blue and white ribbons, it is erected on the festival grounds – Gebenbach is known for particularly tall trees. The traditional highlight is the tree dancing on Sunday afternoon: the Kirwapaare perform waltzes, Sternpolka, and Zwiefache in front of the audience until the Oberkirwapaar (head Kirwa couple) is determined.
Tradition meets modern highlights
In addition to customs, the Gebenbach Kirwa offers modern accents such as a wine bar with a select range, plus brass music, party bands, and a Frühschoppen (morning pint).
The festival combines faith, community, and Bavarian customs into a convivial highlight of the village year.Where it takes place Gebenbach Kirwa
