Four weeks of blossom magic in Europe's largest contiguous sweet cherry growing area
Anyone who comes to Witzenhausen in April understands the nickname immediately: on around 250 hectares, over 150,000 cherry trees grow here – a contiguous sweet cherry growing area unlike any other of this size in Europe. When the plantations around the town are in full bloom in April, the entire Werra Valley becomes a stage. This is precisely when Pro Witzenhausen GmbH, together with local clubs and restaurateurs, organizes the Kirschblütenwochen.
The 2026 Kirschblütenwochen run from April 11th to May 9th and bundle more than 40 individual events into a cohesive experience program. Highlights include the Kirschblütenfest in Wendershausen on April 25th with the traditional presentation of the new candidates for the Witzenhausen royal court and the ceremonial handover of the mantle, plus The Taste of Witzenhausen on April 18th/19th – a culinary mile of delights on the market square, where local restaurants and businesses present their specialties from street food to desserts – and concluding with the atmospheric Marktcafé on May 9th (1 PM–5 PM).
Those who want to explore the plantations actively have a choice: guided cherry blossom hikes on the cherry trails, Segway tours through blooming plantations, bike tours, paddling tours on the Werra river, walks with goats, alpacas, or trikes. For families, there's the Princess and Prince Day at the Ziegenhagen Adventure Park with costume changes and a visit to the Witzenhausen royal court, plus Castle Day at Ludwigstein Castle and concerts in the Liebfrauenkirche.
A special feature of the region: Witzenhausen crowns a Cherry Queen every year – complete with her court. The ceremonial handover of the mantle to the new monarch has been part of the Kirschblütenfest in Wendershausen for generations and gives the town its own piece of living tradition.
The complete program booklet with all over 40 events, registrations for tours and hikes, as well as the digital version of all dates, are available at the Tourist Information office at Markt 12 in Witzenhausen or at kirschenland.de.
