Traditional Middle Franconian Kirchweih on the Limes
The municipality of Wittelshofen is located in the southwestern district of Ansbach in Middle Franconia, near the border with Baden-Württemberg. The village belongs to the historical region of the Hesselbergland and lies along the course of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site here. With around 850 inhabitants, Wittelshofen is a classic Franconian village community with active club life.
The Protestant parish church of Wittelshofen was consecrated in October 1887 — which is why the Kirchweih traditionally falls in mid-October. Specifically, the festival is celebrated two weeks after the Erntedankfest, which usually falls on the third or fourth weekend of October. This timing is typical for rural Protestant Kirchweihen, which are oriented towards the church year and the consecration history of the respective parish church.
For years, the venue has been the Landgasthof Wörnitz Stuben, one of the traditional inns in the village. The Stuben are festively decorated for the Kirchweih, and local clubs host the guests. The festival is complemented by local craft businesses such as Polsterei Beck and Schreinerei Zimmerer, which have actively supported the festival in recent years. A true inn Kirchweih, as they have become rare today.
The Wittelshofen Kirchweih is an example of the still vibrant Franconian Kerwa (Kirchweih) culture in the rural regions of Middle Franconia. Here, the Kirchweih is not cultivated as a tourist festival, but as a local festival — villagers, neighboring communities, and former Wittelshofen residents returning for the Kirchweih form the audience. Anyone who wants to experience the authentic Hesselbergland is in the right place.
As every year, the Kirchweih in Wittelshofen 2026 will be celebrated two weeks after the Erntedankfest — expected in mid-October. The main venue is the traditional Landgasthof Wörnitz Stuben in the town center.
The exact date will be published by the municipality of Wittelshofen a few weeks before the event on local information channels. The festival program typically follows the classic Franconian Kerwa schedule, starting on Friday evening, with the festival on Sunday including a church service and festivities, and a festive Monday with Frühschoppen (morning pint).
Detailed program and exact times will be announced before the festival by the municipality of Wittelshofen and the Landgasthof Wörnitz Stuben. Information is also available at Polsterei Beck and Schreinerei Zimmerer.
Free admission to the festival. Food and drinks at Wörnitz Stuben and club stands at usual inn prices.
Wittelshofen is located between Dinkelsbühl and Wassertrüdingen on the B 25 (Romantic Road). By car, it takes 45 minutes from Ansbach and 25 minutes from Dinkelsbühl. Train connections stop in Wassertrüdingen or Wittelshofen, from where it's a short walk to the Wörnitz Stuben.
Free admission to the festival. Food and drinks are available at the counter of the Wörnitz Stuben and at the stands of the local clubs.
The Hesselberg, Middle Franconia's highest mountain (689 m), is only a few kilometers away — a walk before or after the Kirchweih is worthwhile.
