Middle Franconian autumn Kirchweih with parade and ribbon dance in the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt
Vestenbergsgreuth, with just under 2,000 inhabitants, is located in the Aischgrund region of the Middle Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt in the state of Bavaria. Like many Franconian villages, Vestenbergsgreuth is deeply connected to the Kärwa tradition — the Kirchweih, which has become a three-day to week-long Volksfest in Franconia. The Kirchweih Vestenbergsgreuth will take place from October 8 to 12, 2026 — the official list of Kirchweihen in the ERH district confirms this date.
The district of Erlangen-Höchstadt is one of the most densely populated Kärwa regions in Franconia: over 70 Kerwas are celebrated here every year between April and November — from the well-known Erlanger Bergkirchweih, the largest Volksfest, to the many small village Kirchweihen like the one in Vestenbergsgreuth. A Kärwa follows a fixed pattern: fetching and erecting the Kärwabaum, festive entry of the Kärwaboum and Kärwamadla in traditional costume, parade, ribbon dance, and joint celebrations in the festival tent.
The opening on Thursday or Friday usually involves the erection of the Kärwabaum with a fir crown and colorful ribbons. On the festival Saturday, the social evening in the festival tent with dance music is the focus. The festival Sunday begins with the Kirchweih church service, followed by the parade of the Kärwaboum and Kärwamadla through the town center. On festival Monday, the ribbon dance is performed — a tradition that belongs to the Kärwa in Franconia just as the reaper's round belongs to the Leipheimer Kinderfest.
The district of Frickenhöchstadt in Vestenbergsgreuth celebrates its own Kirchweih in August — the village association Frickenhöchstadt organizes the program there with an Italian Night and the actual Kirchweih. However, the main Kirchweih of the market town of Vestenbergsgreuth remains the October Kirchweih of the main town.
In the festival tent, there is classic Franconian festival cuisine: Schäuferla (pork shoulder) with dumplings, Bratwurst (fried sausage), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Sauerkraut (sauerkraut). Festbier (festival beer) from the surrounding breweries of the Aischgrund is served — the Aischgrund region is one of the most densely populated brewery regions in Franconia. Desserts such as Krapfen (doughnuts), gebrannte Mandeln (candied almonds), and Lebkuchen (gingerbread) complement the culinary offerings.
From October 8 to 12, 2026, Vestenbergsgreuth will celebrate its Kirchweih in the town center. The official list of Kirchweihen in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district confirms the date. The program follows the Franconian Kärwa tradition with the erection of the Kärwabaum, a parade on Sunday, the ribbon dance by the Kärwaboum and Kärwamadla in traditional costume, and festival tent operations with regional beers and Franconian festival cuisine.
Free admission. Food and drinks at typical Franconian festival prices: Maß (liter) of beer approx. 9 EUR, Bratwurst roll approx. 4 EUR, Schäuferla with dumplings approx. 14 EUR.
