One of 40 Nuremberg Kärwas
The Kirchweih Reichelsdorf joins the tradition of around 40 district Kärwas that Nuremberg celebrates every year between April and September. This tradition is deeply rooted in the Franconian region: Originally stemming from the consecration festival of the respective church, the Kärwas have evolved into district festivals with their own character, fixed dates, and established identities.
Reichelsdorf – Southern District of Nuremberg
Reichelsdorf is located in the far south of Nuremberg, near the Main-Danube Canal and the city border with Wendelstein. The district combines village structures with urban connectivity and fosters active club life. The organizer of the Kirchweih is the Bürgerverein Reichelsdorf-Mühlhof e.V., which sets up the festival grounds on the premises of SV Reichelsdorf at Schlößleinsgasse 9.
Kärwabaum and Franconian Tradition
The centerpiece of every Nuremberg Kärwa is the Kärwabaum – a tall, decorated tree trunk erected at the opening of the Kirchweih with the participation of the entire neighborhood. During the Kärwabaum-Austanz, the local folk dance group performs in traditional costume around the tree, accompanied by traditional Franconian melodies. These customs are a vibrant contribution to Franconian folk culture and a connecting element between generations.
Festival Tent, Bratwurst, and Beer
In the festival tent, bands from the region provide the atmosphere – traditional Franconian dance bands, occasionally modern cover bands for the younger generation. Culinary offerings include the classic Franconian repertoire: Nürnberger Bratwürste (Nuremberg sausages), Schäuferla (pork shoulder) with dumplings, Sauerbraten (marinated roast beef), Franconian snack platters, and homemade cakes on Sundays. The beer comes from a regional Franconian brewery.
Rides and Family Day
Fairground operators set up their rides around the festival grounds: carousel, dodgems, swing rides, shooting galleries, and sweet stalls. On Family Day, many operators offer reduced prices for rides. The traditional Krapfenstand – the Franconian Krapfen (doughnuts) are a typical Kirchweih pastry – is also a permanent fixture.
Significance for the District
Like all Nuremberg Kärwas, the Reichelsdorf event demonstrates the cohesion within the district: citizens' associations, sports clubs, the church, and showmen work together to organize the festival. The proceeds partly fund club activities and partly support social projects in the district. Thus, the Kirchweih remains not only a folk festival but also a social anchor in southern Nuremberg.
