A District Kerwa with Character
Neunhof is a northern district of Nuremberg (District 20 — Großgründlach/Neunhof), on the border of the Knoblauchsland. The district has a distinctly village-like character with its own independent club landscape, and the annual Kärwa Neunhof is one of the major social events. The City of Nuremberg officially includes it in its Kirchweih calendar.
What Makes the Kärwa Neunhof Special
- Festival Mile on the Main Street: Neunhofer Hauptstraße is closed for the festival days — the festival tent, stalls, and amusement rides occupy the street space.
- Four Days Long: Friday to Monday — longer than many smaller Kerwa festivals.
- Franconian Specialties: Classic Kerwa format with bratwurst, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), dumplings, beer, and Schorle (mixed drink).
- Club Evenings and Family Time: A mix of club evenings, festival catering, and family Kerwa.
- Traffic Disruption Notice: VAG Nuremberg reroutes bus line 31 during the Kerwa — a clear indication of the event's scale in the city area.
State and Cultural Context
Bavaria, Nuremberg, a city without a district. The Kerwa tradition is particularly vibrant in the village-like districts of Nuremberg — Eibach, Mögeldorf, Reichelsdorf, Neunhof, and others each have their own Kerwa. They are an expression of a village identity that many Nuremberg districts still cultivate beneath the urban surface.
