District Kirchweih in Nuremberg-Boxdorf

The Boxdorfer Kärwa is one of Nuremberg's many district Kirchweihen and is part of the dense network of Middle Franconian Kirchweih tradition in the city. The venue is Boxdorfer Hauptstraße in the northwest of Nuremberg, bordering the Knoblauchsland with its nurseries and farms. It is organized by the Boxdorf local associations, a group of local clubs that manage the festival program year after year.

Middle Franconian Tradition in the Big City

The Boxdorfer Kärwa follows the classic Middle Franconian Kerwa pattern: festival tent with catering, live music, Bavarian classics alongside cover bands, Kerwabaum (Kirchweih pole), Sunday Kirchweih service, and a traditional closing on Monday or Tuesday. The rural character of Boxdorf noticeably shapes the festival – although the district officially belongs to Nuremberg, the festival has more of the charm of a village Kirchweih than a big city festival scene.

What to expect

  • Five-day Kerwa from Friday to Tuesday
  • Festival tent with catering and live music
  • Classic Franconian Kerwa delicacies
  • Kerwabaum on Boxdorfer Hauptstraße
  • Kirchweih service on Sunday
  • Family and children's program

Boxdorf in Nuremberg North

Boxdorf is located in the far northwest of Nuremberg and is a traditional district bordering the Knoblauchsland – one of the best-known vegetable-growing areas in Southern Germany. The city of Nuremberg consciously cultivates its customs through its district Kirchweihen, supported jointly by the property management office and local associations. The Boxdorfer Kärwa is one of the most popular Kärwas in Nuremberg North.

Boxdorfer Kärwa — edition 2026

The Boxdorfer Kärwa 2026 runs from Friday, July 17th, to Tuesday, July 21st, on Boxdorfer Hauptstraße. Five days of district Kirchweih with a festival tent, live music, and Kerwabaum in Nuremberg North.

As in previous years, the Boxdorfer Kärwa 2026 will take place on the third weekend of July, including the traditional Kirchweih Monday and Tuesday. Boxdorfer Hauptstraße will be transformed into a continuous festival zone for the celebration days – the festival tent, catering stalls, and stage will be set up in the middle of the street.

The Kerwabaum will be erected to kick things off, Sunday features the Kirchweih service, live bands and cover bands play in the evenings, and families will find their place during the family afternoon.
