Traditional Franconian Kirchweih in November in Middle Franconia
The Kirchweih Hemmersheim takes place every year in mid-November – making it one of the latest Kerwa festivals in the Franconian festival calendar, which in most places runs from Pentecost to All Saints' Day. Hemmersheim, a small community in the southern district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim, belongs to the administrative district of Uffenheim and lies on the border with Baden-Württemberg.
A special feature of Hemmersheim: The municipality consists of several districts, each celebrating its own Kirchweih. In autumn 2026, the Kerwa season will be staggered: Pfahlenheim starts from October 23 to 27, Lipprichhausen follows from November 6 to 8, and the main village of Hemmersheim concludes on November 12. This staggering is typical of the Franconian Kerwa landscape, where each village celebrates its own Kirchweih as the most important event of the year.
As with every Franconian Kerwa, a few central elements are at the heart of the celebration: the festive church service on Kirchweih Sunday, the Kirchweih tree decorated with colorful ribbons, traditional dolls, and Kirchweih boys; extensive inn evenings with Franconian beer and delicacies; a festive dance event in the inn; and on the last day, the traditional 'Auspflanzen' with the auctioning of dance rights. The local Kirchweih society, together with the inn and the parish, is the organizer.
Hemmersheim is located on the southern edge of the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district, directly on the border with the Baden-Württemberg Tauber region. The area is rural, characterized by viticulture, and belongs to the most traditional Kerwa landscapes in Franconia. Anyone who wants to experience a Franconian Kirchweih in its original form will find an authentic example in Hemmersheim, without touristy staging.
The official overview from the Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district designates November 12 as the festival day for Hemmersheim, with festivities typically continuing until the following Sunday, featuring a classic Kerwa Sunday. Following the district Kerwas of Pfahlenheim (late October) and Lipprichhausen (early November), Hemmersheim thus concludes the Kerwa season.
The exact festival schedule will be announced by the local Kirchweih society in autumn 2026. Those who wish to experience the authentic rural Kerwa are best advised to attend the Sunday service and the afternoon inn festivities.
Note: Detailed festival program will be announced by the local Kirchweih society shortly – inquiries can be made via the municipality of Hemmersheim and the administrative district of Uffenheim.
Hemmersheim is located about 10 km southwest of Uffenheim, accessible via the B13 and the A7 (Uffenheim exit). By train to Uffenheim, then continue by bus.
Free. Food and drinks in the inn at usual restaurant prices.
Those who want to fully enjoy the Franconian Kerwa experience should combine the Kirchweih Hemmersheim (Nov 12) with the preceding festivals in Pfahlenheim (Oct 23–27) and Lipprichhausen (Nov 6–8).
