Four evenings of open-air cinema under the stars of Upper Franconia
The Fränkischer Kinosommer is a travelling open-air cinema series that visits several towns and communities in Upper Franconia every summer — including Coburg, Bad Rodach, Kronach, and other locations besides Neustadt bei Coburg. The organizer is Radio Eins in cooperation with local municipalities and sponsors. The Neustadt venue is one of the most traditional locations in the series.
The venue in Neustadt is the Villeneuve-sur-Lot leisure park — named after its twin town in the south of France — with a spacious lawn, benches, and a stage. After dark, the mobile big screen is set up, and the audience makes themselves comfortable on blankets, camping chairs, or the existing benches. Admission is from 8 p.m., and the film starts around 9 to 9:30 p.m., depending on sunset.
Mostly current feature films from the previous season are shown — a mix of German productions, international mainstream, and occasional arthouse cinema. The program is published every year in early summer and reacts to the current film market. Before each screening, there is a short introduction, as well as food and drink stands on the lawn.
Free admission is the hallmark of the Fränkischer Kinosommer and is made possible by local sponsors. This low barrier makes the festival particularly accessible — families, seniors, and film fans from all over the Coburg region come together over the four evenings. The screening will still take place in case of rain (with rain gear); cancellation only occurs in case of an official severe weather warning.
From Monday, August 3, to Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Fränkischer Kinosommer will take place at the Villeneuve-sur-Lot leisure park in Neustadt bei Coburg. On four consecutive evenings, feature films will be shown on the mobile big screen — with free admission thanks to local sponsors.
Entry is from 8 p.m. each evening, and the film start depends on when it gets dark, typically between 9 and 9:30 p.m. The organizers are the town of Neustadt bei Coburg and Radio Eins as the umbrella organization for the Kinosommer series.
The complete film program — four current feature films from the previous cinema season — will be published by the organizer Radio Eins / Stadt Neustadt in good time before the festival at fraenkischer-kinosommer.de.
Free admission. Food and drink stands on site at usual festival prices.
Neustadt bei Coburg is located on the B 4 and B 89 federal highways, a 15-minute drive from Coburg, 10 minutes from Sonneberg (across the state border into Thuringia). Neustadt train station is on the Coburg-Sonneberg line. The Villeneuve-sur-Lot leisure park is about 1 km from the train station.
Free admission thanks to local sponsors. Admission from 8 p.m., film start after dark (approx. 9:00–9:30 p.m.).
Blanket or camping chair recommended. Rain gear — the screening takes place even in light rain.
