For years, "Kino auf der Burg" in Esslingen am Neckar has been among the Top 3 most beautiful open-air cinemas in Germany — regularly featured in rankings by relevant film magazines and travel guides. In 2026, the 32nd edition runs from Thursday, July 30, to Saturday, August 8, 2026. Eleven film nights, selected films from the international and German film scene, a unique setting: the medieval castle courtyard of Esslingen with a panoramic view over the city.

Castle Courtyard as an Open-Air Cinema Hall

The Esslingen Castle Courtyard is the main attraction of the festival: a medieval courtyard above the old town, with castle walls, the historic "Dicker Turm" (Thick Tower) backdrop, and an unobstructed view over Esslingen's old town with its half-timbered roofs. As darkness falls, the film projection begins on a large open-air screen — the atmosphere combines castle ambiance, summer starry sky, and the communal experience of an open-air cinema. Up to 3,000 visitors can be accommodated per screening.

Kommunales Kino Esslingen — Over 30 Years of Tradition

The organizer is the Kommunales Kino Esslingen — a municipal art-house cinema that has cultivated independent and arthouse-oriented film in Esslingen for decades. "Kino auf der Burg" has been running since 1993, and with over 32 years of tradition, it is one of the oldest and best-established open-air cinemas in the region. The Kommunales Kino offers film programs year-round and organizes special events such as the Queer Film Festival, the Crime Days, and children's film programs.

Film Program — International, Selected

The film program is curated by the Kommunales Kino and mixes current box-office hits, selected arthouse films, and rediscoveries. International and German films are equally represented. Catering and Atmosphere

Before and during the screenings, a diverse range of catering is available: international cuisine (Indian, Ethiopian, Italian), classic cinema snacks (popcorn, nachos), beer, wine, soft drinks. Bring your own blankets and folding chairs — the castle courtyard has limited fixed seating. The open-air cinema thrives on its "Picnic Festival Character" — community, cozy seating under the open sky, films as a collective summer experience.

Volunteer Commitment

"Kino auf der Burg" is strongly supported by volunteers — around 3,500 volunteer hours are contributed annually by the Friends' Association and the citizens of Esslingen. This shared support explains the warm, almost familial atmosphere of the festival and the enduring connection of Esslingen's residents to "their" summer cinema.
