The Kingerumer Kerb – in the Rheinhessen dialect, “Kingerum” stands for Köngernheim – is the first Kirchweih of the season in Rheinhessen. It takes place every year on the weekend after Easter, thus opening the long series of Rheinhessen Kerb festivals that shape the region's social life well into autumn.
Köngernheim is a small wine village in the Rhein-Selz collective municipality, located in the Selz valley in southern Rheinhessen between Mainz, Worms, and Oppenheim. The Kerb commemorates the consecration of the local church and is one of the community's oldest and most enduring traditions.
The Kerb is traditionally organized by the Köngernheimer Carneval Club (KCC) and other local clubs. The KCC serves classic folk festival food such as fries, bratwurst, and currywurst, especially on Sunday and Monday. Köngernheim vintners serve their wines, and several stages provide a lively atmosphere with live music.
For four days, the classic elements of a Rheinhessen Kerb characterize the event: opening on Friday evening with a keg tapping ceremony, a morning pint on Saturday, family day on Sunday, and club night on Monday. Carousels and smaller amusement rides complete the festival grounds in the village center. As the Kingerumer Kerb is the season opener, it holds special significance as a meeting point for the entire region – many guests from surrounding villages visit the first Rheinhessen festival day of the year.
The Kingerumer Kerb embodies authentic Rheinhessen festival culture in a manageable setting supported by local clubs. It combines the tradition of the Kirchweih with the joie de vivre of a region proud of its wine culture, its clubs, and its strong sense of community celebration.
