Romantic Christmas market below the Burgkirche in the historic Rosengarten of Ober-Ingelheim
Ober-Ingelheim, the historic core of today's city of Ingelheim am Rhein, is dominated by the Burgkirche – a late Romanesque-Gothic church from the 14th century that towers over the old town on a hill and has been a city landmark for centuries. Directly below the Burgkirche lies the historic Rosengarten, a park-like area with old trees, remnants of walls, and a special atmosphere.
On the three Advent weekends in December 2026 (second, third, and fourth Advent weekends), this Rosengarten transforms into a romantic Christmas market. Wooden stalls with fairy lights, a central mulled wine stand, stalls with crafts, artisanal goods, Advent decorations, Christmas baking, and regional specialties are arranged around the historic walls.
The market deliberately differs from large commercial Christmas markets: it is small, charming, and supported by local stallholders, associations, and initiatives from Ingelheim and the surrounding region. No mass crowds, no industrial uniformity of stalls, but an almost familiar atmosphere in one of Rheinhessen's most beautiful settings.
The program, spread across the three weekends, includes: Advent music, choir performances, brass ensembles in and in front of the Burgkirche, readings, children's activities with a visit from St. Nicholas, guided tours of the history of the Burgkirche and the Ingelheim Palatinate, as well as special concerts or contemplative services on some evenings.
The culinary offerings feature the classic Advent repertoire: mulled wine – often based on Ingelheim Spätburgunder –, white and red punch, non-alcoholic children's punch, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, almonds, gingerbread, stollen, cookies, lard pastries, and, depending on the stall, international specialties. In the background, the Burgkirche glows with festive illumination – a sight that defines the character of this market.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept: three Advent weekends, a small, charming atmosphere, local stallholders, associations, and initiatives from Ingelheim and Rheinhessen, a central mulled wine stand, Advent music, and a special lighting design of the Burgkirche.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the autumn. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
