North Frisian Riding Game for Children
With just 68 inhabitants, Kolkerheide is the smallest municipality in the Amt Mittleres Nordfriesland — founded in 1761. Despite its small size, the village maintains a vibrant community life and event calendar, characterized by strong community engagement: all maintenance work in the municipality is carried out voluntarily and free of charge by the citizens.
The Kinderringreiten is the child-friendly version of one of the region's oldest traditional games. Young riders — usually between 6 and 14 years old — attempt to spear a small metal ring from the crossbar above the riding track with a wooden lance. The same riding game is also held by adults in larger communities — since 2021, Ringreiten has been recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage.
The organizer of the Kinderringreiten in Kolkerheide is the Joldelund-Kolkerheide Volunteer Fire Brigade. The FFw (Volunteer Fire Brigade) handles the organization, setup of the ring-riding equipment, supervision of the competitions, and catering. This connection between the fire brigade and village life is typical for small North German communities: here, the FFw is not just an emergency response organization but also a pillar of community life.
The Kinderringreiten at the end of May is not the only highlight in the Kolkerheide year — the Dorffest (Village Festival) follows in summer, to which guests from neighboring communities are also welcome. These two dates shape the event calendar of the smallest village in North Frisia, Schleswig-Holstein.
Kolkerheide belongs to the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is located near the Löwenstedter Sandberge nature reserve — a heath landscape that is part of the village's regional identity.
As every year on the last Saturday in May, riders and helpers from the Volunteer Fire Brigade gather in Kolkerheide for the Kinderringreiten. The date, May 30, 2026, falls on an early summer day — usually with good conditions for the outdoor riding game.
The Kinderringreiten in Kolkerheide is part of the extensive network of North German riding clubs and village communities that maintain Ringreiten as a living tradition. Its recognition as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage in 2021 has drawn attention to this custom — especially in the small villages where it has been passed down for generations.
