Traditional village children's festival on the Ringreiterplatz in the district of Steinburg
The Kinderfest is one of the most vibrant festival traditions for children in Schleswig-Holstein — almost every village has its own festival, held once a year, that belongs to the children. Puls, a small community with around 380 inhabitants in the district of Steinburg, upholds this tradition and celebrates its children's festival on the Ringreiterplatz — the village's own festival grounds with a long club history.
A typical children's festival follows a pattern developed over generations: in the morning, assembly at the meeting point, festive procession through the village with trumpeters and a music band, ascent to the festival grounds, then sports competitions and games for various age groups — from Topfschlagen (pot-banging) for the little ones, Sackhüpfen (sack race), Eierlauf (egg race), Ringreiten (ring riding) to the Bobby-Car race. The highlight is the crowning of the children's king and queen, often accompanied by a short festive speech.
Puls is a very small community with around 380 inhabitants in the southern district of Steinburg in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Nestled in the Geest landscape between Itzehoe and Wrist, the village thrives on active club life and community spirit. The children's festival is the most important date in the summer calendar.
This year's Kinderfest begins on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:00 AM on the Ringreiterplatz in Puls. The program follows the traditional Schleswig-Holstein script: sports competitions, games for various age groups, crowning of the children's king and queen, catering by the clubs, and winding down in the afternoon.
Children must be registered with the municipality of Puls for the competition by June 1, 2026. The donation collection by the village community, which finances the festival, took place in May.
