Traditional Upper Franconian Kirchweih with parade, festival tent, and youth customs
The Kengster Kerwa is one of the most traditional village Kirchweihen in the Kulmbach district. It is organized by TSV Ködnitz 1922 e.V. and the Ortsburschen and -madla, the village's volunteer youth association. Ködnitz itself has around 1,700 inhabitants and lies in the valley of the White Main, nestled between the Franconian Forest and the Fichtelgebirge mountains. Here, the Kerwa is more than just a folk festival – it is identity, an occasion where the entire community comes together.
The festival weekend traditionally begins on Thursday with the 'Kerwabaum' (Kerwa tree) being erected by the Ortsburschen, a several-meter-high decorated tree that is put up with painstaking manual labor. On Friday evening, the festival tent kicks off with live music – usually regional dance bands from Upper Franconia – and a beach party. Saturday is dedicated to classic festival operations with a Mallorca party atmosphere. Sunday features the festive Kerwa parade through the village with the Burghaig music club, followed by dancing at the festival grounds. Monday concludes the Kerwa with the 'Krenfleischessen' (horseradish meat meal) and the 'Hausensingen', where the Ortsburschen go from house to house with accordions.
Culinary-wise, the Kengster Kerwa is a tribute to Franconian tavern cuisine: Krenfleisch (pork with horseradish), pork knuckle, schnitzel, Sauerbraten, and fallow deer ragout. Vegetarian guests can find homemade Käsespätzle. Regional beer from Upper Franconian breweries is served alongside.
Ködnitz is located between Kulmbach and Bayreuth in the Bavarian state of Bavaria, Kulmbach district. The Kerwa is firmly anchored in the Franconian customs calendar and attracts guests from the neighboring towns of Untersteinach, Trebgast, and Stadtsteinach.
The Kengster Kerwa has followed a fixed pattern for years: opening on Thursday or Friday with the festival tent kickoff, live music on Saturday with a dance band and beach party elements, the festival parade on Sunday with the Burghaig music club, Krenfleischessen, and Hausensingen on Monday. The exact band program for 2026 is expected to be announced in July on the club's website and via Instagram.
Based on experience, the Kerwa attracts visitors from the entire Kulmbach district. Those who want to secure a table in the festival tent should reserve with TSV Ködnitz in good time.
The exact band program for 2026 will be published by TSV Ködnitz a few weeks before the event via the club's website and Instagram.
