Grand Carnival Parade on Tulip Sunday through the city center of the Roman city on the Rhine
Remagen, once an important Roman site on the Rhine and later world-famous for the history of its bridge in World War II, cultivates a vibrant carnival tradition. The carnival parade on Tulip Sunday is the highlight of the season, uniting local carnival societies, schools, clubs, and music bands for a joint appearance through the city center.
Assembly is at 2:11 PM, a symbolic time in Rhenish carnival. The parade consists of floats, walking groups, dance troupes, music bands, and schools. Elaborately designed theme floats humorously and satirically address local, regional, and supra-regional topics. The floats are accompanied by costumed club members who throw sweets, small gifts, and bouquets into the cheering crowd.
The parade route leads through Remagen's city center, past the medieval city wall and historic buildings. The Apollinaris Church towers majestically in the background over the scene. Families, carnival enthusiasts, and day-trippers crowd the sidewalks, celebrating with carnival shouts, swaying songs, and plenty of Kamelle (sweets). Cafés and restaurants along the route open their doors to the festive guests.
The Remagen parade is part of a packed carnival program in the Ahrweiler district. From Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival Day) to Veilchendienstag (Shrove Tuesday), jesters parade through the streets in Bad Breisig, Sinzig, Bad Neuenahr, Adenau, and many other villages. The Tulip Sunday parade in Remagen is one of the most well-attended and benefits from its central location on the Rhine with good rail and road connections.
Like all municipalities in the Ahr Valley, Remagen has also experienced the difficult years after the 2021 flood. Carnival has taken on a special significance as a symbol of reconstruction and joie de vivre. The clubs are holding onto traditions and bringing confidence and a sense of community to the city on the Rhine with their colorful parades.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Route marshals, medical services, and traffic management ensure an orderly process. Families can find a good spot in the quieter sections of the route.
Arrival of participating clubs, setup of floats at the assembly point, final preparations by float crews and walking groups.
Welcome of float builders by the carnival society, distribution of starting numbers, assembly in the designated order.
Opening of the parade by the parade leader, start of movement through the city center of the Roman city.
Parade through the main street and pedestrian zone, passing dense rows of spectators. Throwing Kamelle and small gifts to the crowd. Music bands play carnival hits and march music.
Dispersal of the parade at the end point, return of floats to clubhouses, start of carnival parties in the city center's halls and restaurants.
Carnival parties with live music and DJ sets in local restaurants. Continuation of the festive activities into the night.
