Rosenmontagszug in Ernst an der Mosel in the Cochem municipal association in the Cochem-Zell district
The Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday parade) in Ernst an der Mosel combines Rhenish carnival tradition with the picturesque ambiance of a Moselle village. The wine village in the Cochem municipal association is known for its wine, tourism, and lively community spirit, which organizes a carnival parade through the village center every Rose Monday.
In the 2026 carnival calendar, the parade is on Monday, February 16th. Floats, walking groups, music groups, and jesters will march along the Moselle promenade and through the historic alleys of the village. "Helau" shouts and carnival music will make the wine village come alive.
Ernst is located directly on the Moselle River, between Cochem and Kröv, in one of Germany's most beautiful wine regions. The village thrives on viticulture and tourism, but is also home to an active carnival tradition. The Ernst Carnival Club organizes the Fastnacht (carnival) events, imparting a special charm that combines the winemaking flair with Rhenish carnival.
Rose Monday is the climax of the carnival season – also in Ernst. Floats are built by individuals over weeks, costumes are sewn, and throwing items are collected. The parade winds through the picturesque streets of the village center, past half-timbered houses and wineries. The atmosphere is unique; the contrast between medieval architecture and festive revelry creates a special mood.
On the Moselle, carnival traditionally goes hand in hand with wine. Winemakers open their courtyards and wine shops for a glass of wine to refresh the jesters. Mulled wine and Federweißer (depending on the season) are available, as are beer and non-alcoholic drinks. Doughnuts, Riesling slices, and hearty snacks provide culinary accompaniment.
After the parade, the festive activities move into the hall of the club house, one of the local inns, or a wine tavern. The celebration continues late into the night with live music, a DJ, or carnival hits. Tourism in Ernst ensures that visitors from outside can combine the carnival weekend with overnight stays in guesthouses and hotels.
