Practical information — Kappensitzungen Alsweiler
Getting there
Alsweiler is located in the St. Wendel district, about 35 km north of Saarbrücken. By car, take the A1 motorway, exit St. Wendel/Tholey, then the L141 towards Marpingen-Alsweiler. Public transport access is difficult — bus connections to Alsweiler are limited in the evenings. Recommendation: carpool or taxi.

Tickets for the Kappensitzungen are sold in advance directly at the Alsweiler Parish Hall. Dates are announced on the TuKV website and the club's Facebook page. Book quickly: the sessions often sell out.
Tips
Costumes are welcome, but not mandatory. However, a head covering — preferably a festive one — is considered the minimum. If you're an outsider, it's advisable to bring a local who can occasionally translate the punchlines.
Faasend in Alsweiler — over 100 years of tradition
The Kappensitzungen of TuKV Alsweiler are among the most traditional carnival events in the Sankt Wendel district. The Theater- und Karnevalverein (TuKV) Alsweiler e. V. was founded in 1922 — during a financially difficult period of the Weimar Republic. At that time, founding a theater club was a statement; today, the club is over 100 years old and forms the cultural backbone of Alsweiler, a district of Marpingen.
How the sessions unfold
Two sessions are held each season in the Alsweiler Parish Hall — traditionally on the two Saturdays before the actual carnival week. The hall is intimate, making for a particularly close-knit atmosphere. The program includes:
- Political sketches relating to local events in Marpingen and the Saarland — written and performed by club members
- 'Bütt' speeches on current affairs, often with a sharp wit
- Dance troupe performances with 'Mariechen' (solo dancers) and 'Funkengarde' (garde dancers)
- A live orchestra accompanies the entire stage program
- Show dance performances and guest appearances by friendly clubs
Saarländische Faasend — not Rhenish-style Carnival
Important to know: In Saarland, Carnival is called Faasend. It is closer to the Palatinate 'Fastnacht' than to the Rhenish Carnival of Cologne — and particularly down-to-earth in the St. Wendel district. At TuKV Alsweiler, you won't experience the glamorous TV carnival shows, but rather local sketches, regional jokes, and an atmosphere where everyone in the hall knows everyone else.
Theater tradition all year round
TuKV is not just a carnival club. Since its founding in 1922, it has primarily been a theater club. In spring and autumn, plays (fairy tales, comedies) are performed — also in the Alsweiler Parish Hall. A youth theater group ensures the next generation.
Alsweiler and Marpingen
Alsweiler is a district of the municipality of Marpingen in the northern Saarland. Its approximately 1,500 inhabitants maintain a vibrant club life, in which TuKV plays a central role. Anyone wanting to experience authentic Saarland village culture beyond the big cities will find themselves in the right place here.
