Traditional three-day Hunsrück Kirmes from Saturday evening to Monday with live music and filled dumplings
The Kannekerb is the traditional summer fair of the Hunsrück municipality of Schwarzerden, in the heart of the Kirner Land region. For three days – from Saturday evening until late on Monday – the village celebrates in and around the Samm Hall on Brühlstraße. The Kirmesgemeinschaft Schwarzerden (Festival Community Schwarzerden) organises the event in the old tradition, ensuring a packed programme of live music, morning pint (Frühschoppen), and culinary specialities.
A highlight for many regular guests are the filled dumplings (gefüllte Klöße) on Monday: a hearty Hunsrück speciality, filled with bacon or minced meat and served with gravy. Those who want to experience the genuine village fair of the Hunsrück will find one of the most authentic addresses in the region here.
The term "Kannekerb" likely goes back to old Hunsrück dialect customs (Kanne = drinking vessel, Kerb = church consecration festival or Kirmes). Like many village fair festivals in the region, the tradition dates back to the church consecration festival of the local patron saint, but over the centuries it has developed into a popular harvest festival. Schwarzerden, with around 230 inhabitants, is one of the smallest municipalities in the Kirner Land administrative district, yet it preserves this custom to this day with considerable commitment from the Kirmesgemeinschaft.
The festival kicks off on Saturday evening from 8 p.m. with live music in the Samm Hall. A local band will provide a lively atmosphere for dancing until the early hours of the morning. On Sunday morning, the festival begins with the Frühschoppen (morning pint): the Bockenauer Dorfmusikanten will play traditional brass music, accompanied by hearty specialities. Sunday afternoon is family-friendly with catering, coffee, and cake. Monday focuses on the culinary highlight: the filled dumplings will be served, and the celebration continues late into the evening.
Filled dumplings (often called "Hunsrücker Klöß" or "Knödel mit Füllung" in the Hunsrück dialect) are a traditional Sunday and festive dish of the region. Made from grated raw and cooked potatoes, they are filled with fried bacon, onions, and sometimes minced meat. They are served with cream sauce or gravy, accompanied by sauerkraut or salad. The Kannekerb in Schwarzerden is one of the places where the dumpling tradition is maintained with great dedication.
The Sunday Frühschoppen with the Bockenauer Dorfmusikanten has been a fixed point of the Kannekerb for years. The group from nearby Bockenau plays classic brass music, polkas, and waltzes, occasionally also modern pieces. The Samm Hall on Brühlstraße provides the ideal backdrop: a traditional village hall with a dance floor, long tables, and a bar that has witnessed countless generations of weddings, Kirmes festivals, and club celebrations.
The 2026 edition of the Kannekerb in Schwarzerden will take place from Saturday 15 to Monday 17 August. The organiser is the Kirmesgemeinschaft Schwarzerden. Programme highlights include live music on Saturday evening, the Sunday Frühschoppen with the Bockenauer Dorfmusikanten, and the filled dumplings on Monday. The venue is the Samm Hall on Brühlstraße.
The Kirmesgemeinschaft Schwarzerden organises the festival in its usual manner. The specific bands for the Saturday dance event and the Sunday/Monday lunch programme will be announced on the VG Kirner Land event page shortly before the date.
