Traditional Midsummer Festival of the Weserlust Choir Association on the Longest Day of the Year
The Johannisbaumfest is one of the oldest traditional festivals in German villages. It marks the summer solstice around June 21 – the longest day and shortest night of the year. In Wahmbeck, this custom is maintained by the Weserlust Wahmbeck Choir Association from 2005, an active club that shapes the musical and social life of the village.
At the heart of the festival is the Johannisbaum – a tree, usually felled in early summer, which is decorated with ribbons, wreaths, and ornaments and solemnly erected. The custom has its roots in pre-Christian times and was later associated with the Christian Midsummer Day (June 24, commemoration of John the Baptist). In Northern Germany, and especially in the villages along the Weser, this custom has survived in various forms.
The Weserlust Choir Association is the organizer and at the same time the musical center of the festival. Folk songs, summer songs, and polyphonic choral singing form the musical program. Joint singing is a central element – the community spirit of the village is palpable through the shared music.
Food, drinks, and communal activities around the Johannisbaum create the warm atmosphere for which the festival is known. Families, regular guests, locals from Wahmbeck, and visitors from neighboring towns come together to celebrate.
Wahmbeck is located directly on the Upper Weser in the Solling-Vogler Nature Park. The scenic location on the river lends the Johannisbaumfest a special atmosphere – the summer sun, the long evening hours, and the river ambiance make the festival evening an unforgettable experience.
The 2026 edition of the Johannisbaumfest Wahmbeck upholds a custom that has been lost in many parts of Northern Germany. In Wahmbeck, the tradition lives on – supported by the commitment of the choir association and the entire village community.
The scenic location on the west bank of the Weser and the special atmosphere of the summer solstice make the festival an unforgettable experience.
