Premiere for Norderney

Lower Saxony has a vibrant barbecue culture. However, there has not been a state championship of this kind before. With the 1st Lower Saxony Grill Championship, Norderney is taking on the pioneering role in 2026 and hosting the premiere event at the central Kurplatz. The choice of the island location gives the competition charisma and tourist visibility from the outset.

Competition Format

Amateur barbecue teams and ambitious hobbyists from all over Lower Saxony can participate. Grilling will take place in several disciplines – typically meat (beef, pork, poultry), fish, and dessert. A jury of professional chefs and barbecue experts will evaluate taste, doneness, appearance, and creativity. In the end, the title Lower Saxony State Grill Master will be awarded, opening the door to nationwide barbecue championships for the winning team.

Enjoyment for Visitors

Visitors can often taste what the professionals are grilling. Accompanying this, street food stalls, beverage providers, and live music offer a Volksfest-like setting. Admission is free – so the event is open to island guests and day-trippers alike.

Culinary Spectacle on the Island

With the new format, Norderney is positioning itself as a culinary event destination in May. The weekend of the Grill Championship falls within the already strong spring season, with city festivals, kite festivals on the mainland, and increasing tourist frequency on the island. Antenne Norderney has announced the event as a highlight of the Norderney event calendar for 2026.
