Monthly jazz concerts by internationally renowned acts at M8 in Mainz's Mitternachtsgasse
For decades, Jazzinitiative Mainz (JIM) has been the central hub for jazz in Mainz's cultural landscape. As a member association, JIM organizes a dense program focusing on the contemporary jazz scene in Europe, America, and select international hotspots—from Scandinavia, France, and Great Britain to Israel, New York, and Chicago.
The 2026 Concert Series includes monthly concerts from January to May (typically on a fixed day of the week each month), all starting at 8:30 PM at M8—an intimate venue at Mitternachtsgasse 8, right in Mainz's city center. M8 is a cultural space with a bar, a low stage, and approximately 80 to 100 seats, acoustically and atmospherically ideal for jazz quartets, quintets, and solo recitals.
The JIM's program is curated in the best sense of the word: internationally renowned, festival-worthy acts alternate with emerging artists and unusual constellations. JIM consciously embraces a broad definition of jazz—Modern Mainstream, ECM-oriented chamber jazz, Latin and Brazilian inspirations, Free Jazz and improvisation, crossover with classical, folk, and electronic music all find a place. Thus, JIM is not a purist organization but an open platform for the entire spectrum of contemporary jazz creation.
Concerts start at 8:30 PM, usually last two sets with an intermission, and end around 11 PM—the M8 remains open as a bar afterward. The association's character is reflected in the atmosphere: members know each other, conversations between musicians and the audience after the concert are common, and new guests are welcome.
Membership in JIM costs a moderate annual fee and includes free admission to all concerts of the season and regular program information. Guests who are not members pay a single admission fee at the door—typically between €15 and €25 per concert.
JIM is part of a nationwide network of local jazz initiatives and regularly collaborates with the Jazz Department of the Hochschule für Musik Mainz, the Enjoy Jazz Festival (Heidelberg/Mannheim), and other regional partners.
The exact program for 2026 will be published monthly by JIM. The structure follows the proven guidelines of previous years: one concert per month from January to May, always on a fixed day of the week (usually Tuesday or Wednesday), starting at 8:30 PM at M8, two sets with an intermission, concert ending around 11 PM. Bar atmosphere before and after the concerts. Internationally renowned jazz acts alternate with emerging artists and unusual constellations. The summer break begins after the May concert; the season restarts in the autumn.
