Germany's only guild wine festival with traditional tree setting and the crowning of the Trarbach City Wine Queen
The Stadtschröter were a separate guild in many wine towns: they were responsible for loading heavy wine barrels into cellars using ropes and ramps – a physically demanding, highly specialized, and well-paid job. In Traben-Trarbach, the tradition has been revived and transformed into a modern customs guild that organizes its own guild wine festival every year around Jakobstag (July 25th). It is the only one of its kind in Germany.
The festival begins on Friday, July 28th, 2026, at 4 PM and runs throughout the weekend until Monday evening, July 31st. Trarbach's town center – the market square, Buddelstraße, squares, and alleys – transforms into a festival area with wine served by guild members and participating vintners, regional food stalls, music stages, and symbolic acts of the guild.
The central traditional act is the tree setting on Saturday afternoon. The Stadtschröter, in historical costumes, ceremonially erect a decorated tree on the market square – a symbol of the connection between the city, viticulture, and craftsmanship. This act is accompanied by music bands and a large audience.
Sunday is the day of the festive crowning of the new Trarbacher Stadtweinkönigin. The outgoing queen hands over her crown to her successor in the presence of the guild, associations, guests, and politicians. A ceremonial act, a reception, and a musical program follow until the evening.
The Jakobstag of the Stadtschröter is more than just a wine festival: it is a living piece of tradition preservation that connects the history of Trarbach's wine trade with the present wine region. Anyone who wants to experience historical guilds, traditional costumes, customs, and Mosel wine at the same time will find a unique combination here in Germany.
The 2026 edition of Jakobstag follows the classic schedule. Opening is on Friday at 4 PM, after which the town center fills with guests who, in a relaxed atmosphere, taste wine, enjoy regional specialties, and learn about the guild's unique customs.
Throughout all four days, the Stadtschröter are present in their historical costumes. They perform the symbolic acts of the festival, serve wine, accompany parades, and involve visitors in explaining their history.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
The festival area is concentrated on the market square, Buddelstraße, and the adjoining alleys of Trarbach's town center.
Traben-Trarbach is accessible via the B 53 and B 50 roads, as well as the Moseltalbahn railway.
Free admission. Wine, food, and drinks are paid for on-site at the stalls.
Wearing (wine-related) traditional clothing is encouraged, but not mandatory. The Stadtschröter themselves appear in their historical guild attire.
