Grand vintage presentation of the Mayschoß-Altenahr winery cooperative with tasting of current vintages over two days in August
Founded in 1868, the Mayschoß-Altenahr winery cooperative is considered the oldest winery cooperative in the world. With around 350 members and over 130 hectares of vineyards in the upper Ahr Valley, it is one of the defining players in Ahr wine, one of Germany's northernmost wine-growing regions and a specialist in Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Frühburgunder, and Portugieser. The cooperative has mastered the reconstruction after the 2021 Ahr flood as one of its major projects and, since returning to normal operations, is once again presenting vintages of the highest quality.
The annual presentation in mid-August offers the opportunity to taste the cooperative's current vintages in one place. Tasting stations are spread across several areas of the winery operations—from the grape reception to the stainless steel tank storage to the historic barrel cellar, which is one of the most impressive rooms in the region. The different rooms illustrate the individual production steps and create a special atmosphere for the tasting.
The focus of the tasting is on the cooperative's red wines, especially the Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), whose slate terroir on the steep slopes of the Ahr Valley gives it its special minerality. Frühburgunder as an Ahr Valley specialty, Portugieser as a historic variety, and some white wines complement the portfolio. Limited selections and single-vineyard wines, which are less common in regular sales, will also be presented as part of the presentation.
Accompanying the wine tasting, culinary specialties from the smoker will be offered—grilled Ahr Valley specialties, sausages, cheese, and bread from regional producers. Meeting the winemakers and the cellar master team is one of the great attractions of the presentation: those with questions about cultivation, vinification, and the style of the wines will find the right contacts here.
The Ahr flood in July 2021 hit the cooperative hard. Cellar buildings, facilities, and wine stock were affected, and reconstruction took several years. The annual presentation has since also been a symbol of reconstruction and the unbroken will to continue the tradition of Ahr wine. Visitors to the festival also support the reconstruction efforts in the Ahr Valley.
The key dates of the program have been confirmed by WG Mayschoß:
45 Euros per person, including tasting and tasting glass, available in advance on the WG Mayschoß website.
In the cooperative's historic grape reception area, the youngest vintages and an overview of the most important vineyard sites will be presented. The sommeliers will introduce the style of each wine and answer questions about vinification.
In the modern stainless steel tank storage, the focus will be on the Pinot Noir and Frühburgunder of the current vintages. The tasting will concentrate on the blended wines and single-vineyard wines aged in steel tanks.
The listed barrel cellar with its old wooden barrels forms the heart of the tasting. Here, the premium selections and reserve wines aged in wooden barrels will be presented, which are often available only in limited quantities.
Smoker specialties with grilled Ahr Valley specialties, sausages, and cheese from regional producers will be offered at moderate prices. Bread, butter, and side dishes will complement the offerings.
During the presentation, the tasted wines can be purchased in the cooperative's sales area. Limited selections may be reserved in limited quantities for festival visitors.
