Whitsun Sunday Jazz with the Wilhelmshaven Bigband at Pumpwerk
The Jade-Jazz-Jam has been a fixture of Wilhelmshaven's Whitsun programme for years. On Whitsun Sunday, the Pumpwerk cultural center opens its outdoor area for an open-air jazz format that attracts regulars, jazz enthusiasts, and spontaneous Whitsun visitors alike. The idea is simple and compelling: one stage, a central big band, changing guest ensembles, and an audience spending a Whitsun Sunday in the sun in a relaxed atmosphere.
At the heart of it all is the Wilhelmshaven Bigband — an orchestra of dedicated musicians from the region, which has been presenting itself for years with a large repertoire and high musical quality. From classic swing and bebop to modern big band arrangements, the band covers the most important styles of jazz history. The programme is complemented by changing jazz ensembles from Wilhelmshaven and the surrounding region, sometimes also featuring guest musicians of national importance.
Free admission is possible thanks to funding from Sparkasse Wilhelmshaven. This form of local sponsorship ensures that a high-quality cultural format is accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget. Food and drinks are offered by Pumpwerk at usual club prices — beer on tap, soft drinks, snacks. Blankets, folding chairs, or simply sitting on the grass: the atmosphere is informal and inviting.
The 2026 edition falls on Whitsun Sunday, May 24th. As in previous years, the Wilhelmshaven Bigband will play the opening and closing pieces, with jazz ensembles from the region alternating in between.
The Jade-Jazz-Jam attracts a multi-generational audience — from jazz enthusiasts to families looking for a relaxed Whitsun Sunday.
