Advent market between the castle and the manor house with puppet theatre and harp music
Mirow Castle Island, with its baroque castle, manor house, St. John's Church, and the ancestral burial site of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, is one of the most important castle ensembles in Northern Germany. Sophie Charlotte was born here in 1744 – the later British queen and namesake of places like Charlottesville and Charlotte Bay. During Advent, the small island in the middle of Lake Mirow transforms into a winter market scene.
Lovingly decorated stalls are lined up between the main castle and the manor house: regional arts and crafts (ceramics, blacksmith work, woodwork, textiles, candles) meet culinary delights – mulled wine, punch, stollen, gingerbread, bratwurst, and Mecklenburg specialities. The market is manageable in size but extremely atmospheric due to its location.
The programme highlight within the castle itself is the Ernst Heiter puppet theatre's performances in the castle's festival hall. With "New Mirow Castle Stories" – often featuring the Thunderstorm Duke and his sister Christel as guest figures – the theatre brings historical subjects to life in puppet form. This is accompanied by harpist Merit Zloch, who plays a historically built harp. Performances are suitable for ages 5 and up, no registration required.
The castle museum remains open during market hours, allowing visitors to experience the historic castle rooms related to the court culture of Mecklenburg-Strelitz – a pleasant indoor programme alongside the outdoor market.
The organisers are the town of Mirow and the State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SSGK MV). This event has been a classic in the state's Advent programme for years and is often included in day-trip itineraries for the Mecklenburg Lake District.
