Ilmenau — Goethe Town, University Town, Thuringian Forest

Ilmenau is located in the Ilm district in the state of Thuringia, on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent eight weeks of his life here and was inspired by the nearby Kickelhahn to write his most famous poem "Wanderer's Nightsong" — hence the nickname Goethe Town. With its four days, the market is significantly more compact than the large Christmas markets in Erfurt or Jena — and that is precisely its charm. Applications for stall spaces are accepted by the city until mid-October — so the market is not just a tourist backdrop, but is newly put together each year.
