Ten days of Goethe — lectures, tours, concerts, and special exhibitions in the Goethe town on the Rennsteig
Few German towns are as closely linked to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as Ilmenau in the Ilm district. On May 3, 1776, Goethe rode to Ilmenau for the first time on behalf of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar to assess the situation after a town fire. In the following decades, he returned to the small town at the foot of the Thuringian Forest about 30 times — as a statesman, a wanderer, and a poet. Works such as the poem 'Wandrers Nachtlied' (Wanderer's Night Song), written on the Kickelhahn mountain a few kilometers from the town, originated in Ilmenau.
The Goethefestwoche uses two dates as anchors: August 28th (Goethe's birthday) and September 6th (local 'Goethe Day'). In between, a diverse program unfolds at the GoetheStadtMuseum and at Goethe-related sites in the town: lectures by prominent Goethe scholars, literary evening events, special tours through Goethe's former office and the former mining area at the Felsenkellerstollen, concerts, and children's programs.
The festival week is organized by the town of Ilmenau together with the Goethegesellschaft Ilmenau-Stützerbach. The venue is the GoetheStadtMuseum on the market square with the renowned Goethe Salon — supplemented by the Kulturscheune Stützerbach, the Stadtkirche (town church), and Goethe hiking trails around Ilmenau. Many events are free; for formats with limited seating, registration is requested.
In 2026, the town will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Goethe's first arrival. The entire year's program — from May 3rd to September 13th — is dedicated to the 'Goethe Year 2026' and culminates in the festival week at the end of August/beginning of September. Highlights include: the special exhibition 'Goethe's Arrival in Ilmenau — Adventure Journey 250 Years Ago' at the GoetheStadtMuseum, new themed tours of the Felsenkellerstollen, and access to Goethe's former office.
The 2026 Goethefestwoche is embedded within the 'Goethe Year 2026' with events running from May 3 to September 13. The festival week itself serves as a ten-day bracket between Goethe's birthday (Aug 28) and the town's Goethe Day (Sep 6).
On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the anniversary year officially opened with a celebratory event at 5:30 PM in the Ilmenau town hall (Amtshaus): two costumed actors reenacted Goethe's arrival, with Martin Strauch from the Goethe Society providing historical commentary. This was followed at 6 PM by the lecture 'Anmutig Tal! Du immergrüner Hain!' (Graceful Valley! You evergreen grove!) by Prof. Dr. Jochen Golz in the Goethe Salon of the GoetheStadtMuseum (free admission, registration recommended, Tel. 03677 600 300).

Ilmenau is located in the Ilm district, south of Erfurt. Easily accessible by train from Erfurt (Regionalbahn Erfurt–Ilmenau, approx. 1 hour). By car: A71 (exit Ilmenau-Ost), then a few minutes to the center.
Many events are free; some (lectures with limited seating, concerts) require tickets. Reservations at +49 3677 600 300 or at the GoetheStadtMuseum.
Afterwards, visit Goethe's cottage on the Kickelhahn — the site of the famous verses 'Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh' (Over all the peaks, there is peace).
