Three days of live music and Altstadtfest in memory of the hatmakers' guild
Anyone strolling through the old town of Kusel will encounter numerous references to a remarkable craft tradition: for centuries, the town was a centre of Palatinate hatmaking. As early as the 17th and 18th centuries, master hatmakers settled here, operating a thriving craft with felt, wool, and fine leather goods. The hatmakers' guild shaped the social life of the town so strongly that it became a symbol of Kusel. The Hutmacherfest, celebrated annually on the second weekend in June, keeps the memory of this craft alive and combines historical awareness with a modern city festival character.
The musical heart of the Hutmacherfest is formed by the two stages in the old town, where about ten live bands perform throughout the weekend. The stylistic spectrum ranges from rock and pop to cover bands, dialect acts, and Schlager music. Bands from the Westpfalz, Saarland, and the wider region perform alongside regionally and nationally known acts. During the day, there are also walking acts, street musicians, and smaller acoustic performances in the side alleys.
Around the stages, stands from local restaurateurs, associations, and market vendors line up. Classic Palatinate specialities such as Saumagen, Leberknödel, and Pfälzer Bratwurst are on the menu, as are street food offerings and sweet treats. Wineries from the region and local breweries provide the appropriate drinks. On Sunday, the shops in the town centre open for the verkaufsoffener Sonntag (Sunday shopping), which additionally draws families and day-trippers to the old town. An arts and crafts market and occasionally a hatmakers' market with contemporary and historical headwear complete the offering.
With its approximately three festival days, several thousand visitors, and its prominent role in the West Palatinate festival culture, the Hutmacherfest is the most important summer festival in the town of Kusel. It offers local associations a platform, generates revenue for the local gastronomy and hotel industry, and strengthens the sense of community among citizens. With its 44th edition in 2026, the festival demonstrates how deeply the event format is rooted in the town's society.
The 2026 edition marks the 44th iteration of the Hutmacherfest. As in previous years, the historic old town will be transformed into a festival mile, characterized by live music, Palatinate specialities, and a relaxed atmosphere that appeals equally to families, young people, and seniors. The organization is handled by the town of Kusel together with the Hutmacherfest association and a multitude of volunteers from local clubs.
The exact program for 2026 with bands and performance times will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Festival opening in the evening with a traditional keg tapping ceremony by the town leadership. First concerts on both stages from early evening. Program until late at night.
Full festival day with live music on two stages, market stalls, culinary offerings, and family entertainment. Concerts and performances throughout the day. Main program in the evening.
