Airfield and Volksfest on the Pentecost weekend at Dessau Hugo Junkers Airfield
When the Junkers biplanes, Bundeswehr helicopters, and agile aerobatic planes fly over the old runway south of Dessau-Roßlau on Pentecost weekend, everyone in the Anhalt region knows: the Hugo Junkers Festival is here. For three days, the tradition of the great pioneer Hugo Junkers, who established his aircraft factories and his first test airfield here in Dessau, shaping civil aviation forever, is celebrated.
You'll be on a real airfield, able to climb between cockpits, watch tandem skydivers glide down to the meadow from 3,000 meters, and, if you're brave enough, take off on sightseeing flights over the Bauhaus city, the Elbe meadows, and the Wörlitz Garden Realm. For children, the festival offers more than just watching: carousels, bouncy castles, model aircraft displays, and the adjacent Hugo Junkers Technology Museum (with a 50% discount for festival visitors) turn the weekend into a family adventure with a learning effect.
The 2026 edition is a double anniversary celebration: DVV Stadtwerke Dessau is hosting the festival for the 20th time, and at the same time, it commemorates the beginnings of aviation around a century ago. Expect Bundeswehr helicopters, an aerobatic team, vintage aircraft, a large model aircraft show, and the traditional festival tent with live music late into the night — Saturday until 0:30 AM.
Dessau-Roßlau, as an independent city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is the cultural hub between the Bauhaus heritage, Junkers industrial history, and the UNESCO World Heritage Wörlitz Garden Realm. The Hugo Junkers Festival is the major Pentecost highlight here, attracting technology fans, families, and Volksfest lovers alike — with a free shuttle from the main train station, you can easily get there without a car.
Pentecost Saturday kicks off at 10 AM with the grand airfield bustle: vintage aircraft roll out of the hangars, the festival tent fills up, and the first sightseeing flights depart. In the afternoon, aerobatic displays and parachute jumps are on the program, while live music in the tent provides entertainment until after midnight. Sunday and Monday focus more on the family program: model aircraft clubs, hands-on Bundeswehr helicopters, vintage cars, a flea market, and bouncy castles. Admission is free for everyone on Monday — a true family outing to round off Pentecost.
The complete 2026 daily program will be published by DVV Stadtwerke at flugplatz-dessau.de/flugplatzfest.
