Small Christmas market at the Liebfrauenkirche Horneburg with arts and crafts, mulled wine, and baked apples
Horneburg is a municipality in the eponymous municipality of Horneburg in the district of Stade, located on the edge of the Altes Land region on the Lühe river. With its castle complex and village character, Horneburg preserves its own identity, which becomes visible in Advent through local festival traditions.
The Liebfrauenkirche Horneburg is the central Protestant church of the municipality and forms its spiritual and architectural center. In Advent, the church square becomes the Christmas market — a spatial configuration that characterizes Advent markets in many northern German villages: market, church, and village community in one place.
The range of stalls follows the classic Christmas market profile: regional arts and crafts, Advent decorations and Christmas ornaments, Advent wreaths and floristry, small gift ideas, homemade baked goods, and jams. The exhibitors are often local clubs, schools, kindergartens, or private hobby artists, whose stall proceeds often benefit social or charitable causes.
Mulled wine in several variations, punch for children, Feuerzangenbowle (flaming rum punch), traditional baked apples with vanilla sauce, candied almonds, gingerbread, and warm snack specialties are part of the culinary offerings. The baked apple is a northern German Advent specialty that holds particular significance in the apple paradise of Altes Land.
The Evangelical Church Community Horneburg and the Friends of Horneburg association are the organizers of the market. The proceeds from the market operations often flow into church and charitable projects of the community — an aspect that gives the market an additional social dimension.
What distinguishes the Horneburg Christmas Market from big-city Christmas markets is the atmosphere of village community. Here, people know each other, chat with stallholders, and meet neighbors — an Advent event with the charm of the familiar and the familial.
Small, familiar, and community-oriented — the Horneburg Christmas Market follows the tradition of northern German Advent events, organized by the church community and the friends' association.
The exact date and program will be published by the church community in late autumn 2026.
