Four-day historic fair with concert organs, carousels, and puppet theatre at the Open Air Museum
The Historic Fair at the Kiekeberg Open Air Museum is one of the year's most popular themed events. For four days, the museum village transforms into a lively historic fair, just as people knew it in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Concert organs, carousels, and puppet theatres, often still hand-operated, create an atmosphere rarely experienced today.
Friday to Monday form the festival framework. Four full festival days allow visitors to experience the extensive program at their leisure. Admission is with a valid day ticket for the Open Air Museum.
A special attraction is the historic concert organs from the heyday of showman organ builders. These mechanical marvels, operated by punch cards or cylinders, produce a distinctive sound that shapes the acoustic backdrop of the fair. In addition, barrel organ players wander through the museum, entertaining visitors with traditional melodies.
Horse carousels, pony carousels, swing boats, and other historic rides from the showmen's collection invite children and adults to take a spin. Some carousels are still operated by hand or muscle power, enhancing the authentic impression of fair culture.
Fortune tellers with crystal balls, puppet theatres with Punch and Judy shows, shooting galleries, show booths with curiosities, and mechanical cabinets of wonder offer a varied program. The showmen often appear in historical costumes, conveying the atmosphere of pre-industrial fair culture.
The Kiekeberg Open Air Museum provides the perfect backdrop: Historic farmhouses, half-timbered buildings, and workshops from the region lend an authentic setting to the fair. The museum bakery, blacksmith, and other craft demonstrations complement the program.
The 2026 edition continues the popular tradition of the Historic Fair at Kiekeberg. Every year in autumn, usually around German Unity Day, the museum presents this themed event with changing showmen from all over Germany.
The historic attractions often come from private collections and are rarely seen outside of such festivals. This makes the Historic Fair at Kiekeberg a unique opportunity to experience this cultural heritage.
