Traditional Palatinate Kerwe in Hinterweidenthal in the Dahn Felsenland on the second weekend of October
The Kerwe – in High German Kirchweih or Kirmes – is the central traditional village celebration in the Palatinate dialect area. It dates back to the patron saint's festival of the local church and has developed over the centuries into a multi-day village festival that bundles the social life of the community. The tradition is still alive and well in Hinterweidenthal today.
The festival classically takes place on the second weekend of October. The Kerwe is usually opened on Friday evening with the traditional Kerweborscht, a staged opening where the Kerweborscht – a group of young men from the village – humorously opens the Kerwe, delivers a Kerwerede (Kerwe speech), and accompanies the events over the days. On Saturday and Sunday, the festival grounds are the focus, with catering by clubs, live bands or DJs, and a dance evening. Sunday is traditionally family day with a Frühschoppen (morning pint).
Hinterweidenthal is located in the southern part of the Palatinate Forest, on the edge of the scenically spectacular Dahn Felsenland with its striking red sandstone formations. The place is primarily known for the Teufelstisch (Devil's Table), one of the most distinctive natural monuments in the Palatinate – a 14-meter-high mushroom-shaped rock that has attracted hikers and tourists for generations. The Kerwe thus combines village tradition with tourism, which is economically important for the area.
As in many Palatinate villages, the Kerwe is supported by local clubs. The sports club, fire department, and music club take turns providing catering on the festival days and are responsible for the organization. The proceeds benefit the clubs' activities. Hinterweidenthal's Kerwe is therefore not just a festival weekend, but also an essential pillar of club life.
The Hinterweidenthal Kerwe 2026 follows the proven tradition: Friday evening opening with Kerweborscht and Kerwerede, Saturday full operation with dance evening, Sunday Frühschoppen and family afternoon. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
