Köngen's Autumn Market Sunday
The Herbstmarkt Köngen is a classic market Sunday in the town center of this municipality of just under 10,000 inhabitants in the Esslingen district. On the 3rd Sunday in September — September 20 in 2026 — the town center between Stöffler-Platz, Oberdorfstraße, and Golterstraße transforms into a compact festival mile with around 40 market stalls. It is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is free. The format preserves the character of a traditional market — consciously less of a Volksfest, more of a Sunday stroll.
Assortment and Stalls
The stalls offer a classic market assortment: handcrafted items made of wood and ceramics, seasonal products (pumpkins, dried fruits, honey, jams), sweets, clothing, household items, and culinary specialties for immediate consumption — Swabian Maultaschen, crêpes, Bratwurst, candied almonds. Local direct marketers are represented as well as traveling market vendors who serve the market routes between Swabia and Baden in autumn.
Children's Flea Market in Hirschstraße
A charming special feature is the concurrently held children's flea market in Hirschstraße. Children up to 14 years old can sell items without registration and without a stall fee — toys, books, clothing, whatever else is being cleared out of the children's room. The concept thrives on its uncomplicated atmosphere and is popular across generations: children learn to sell, parents and grandparents stroll along, and buyers find affordable treasures.
Köngen — Ancient Roman Town in the Neckar Valley
Köngen is located in the Esslingen district at the transition from the Neckar Valley to the Swabian Jura foothills — strategically located on the Stuttgart–Tübingen transport axis. The municipality has a remarkable Roman history: the Grinario fort stood here on the Neckar Limes, the remains of which now belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes." The Herbstmarkt is part of a vibrant club life, which is also evident in the Spring Festival, the Festival of Lights, and the Christmas Market.
