For years, the UniCinema has been the tried-and-tested prelude to the Helmstedt University Days. While the main events on Friday and Saturday are characterized by academic lectures, Thursday evening opens with a film, offering a sensory, narrative introduction to the annual theme.

Theme 2026 — Paths out of War

The 32nd Helmstedt University Days are dedicated to the question of how societies find their way from war back to peace. The UniCinema film will likely be selected from this thematic line — possibilities include historical documentaries, feature films on specific peace treaties, biographical films about peace activists, or contemporary examples from current conflict zones.

Film Discussion Afterwards

The UniCinema is not intended as a mere film screening, but as a starting point for discussion. After the screening, an expert will moderate a film discussion, allowing the audience to ask questions and contextualize the film's content. This creates the transition from the emotional-narrative format of the film to the discursive format of the University Days.

Part of the Main Event September 24–27, 2026

The UniCinema is organizationally part of the four-day main event (September 24–27, 2026). Those who participate in the entire weekend begin on Thursday evening with the cinema, continue on Friday and Saturday with lectures in the Juleum, and conclude on Sunday with the celebratory service in St. Stephani. Those who wish to attend only individual program points are particularly welcome at the UniCinema.

Helmstedter Universitätstage e.V.

The organizer is Helmstedter Universitätstage e.V., which has been hosting the University Days since 1995. The association is part of the comprehensive Helmstedt cultural project “Grenzenlos — Wege zum Nachbarn” (Boundless — Paths to the Neighbor), which cultivates the connection of the former university town to its Central and Eastern European neighbors.
