Weekly public tours of Europe's oldest Jewish cemetery
The Heiliger Sand in Worms is the oldest preserved Jewish cemetery in Europe. The oldest legible gravestones date back to the 11th century; the most recent burials took place in the first half of the 20th century. With over 2,000 preserved gravestones, the cemetery is a unique testimony to medieval and early modern Ashkenazi Jewish culture in Central Europe. In 2021, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the Worms Synagogue and Mikveh, as well as the sites in Mainz and Speyer, as "SchUM Sites".
The Worms Tourist Information offers weekly public tours during the warmer half of the year. The season begins on March 20, 2026, and ends on November 27, 2026. In the summer half-year (March–October), the tours take place on Fridays at 3 p.m.; in November, the time shifts to 2 p.m. to accommodate the shorter days.
On a few Fridays, the public tours are cancelled — either for religious reasons or due to closed appointments: Good Friday, May 22, September 11, and September 25, 2026. The exact list can be viewed at worms-erleben.de.
Out of religious respect, male participants must wear a head covering. The number of participants is limited to a maximum of six people per tour to preserve the atmosphere of the cemetery and enable a focused experience. Tickets are sold via ticket-regional.de or the Worms Tourist Information.
The weekly 2026 season series allows you to explore the medieval Jewish heritage of Worms in an intimate small group. The tours are led by trained guides from the Tourist Information and last approximately 90 minutes.
The tour can be complemented by a visit to the Worms Synagogue and Mikveh — all part of the UNESCO World Heritage SchUM Sites.
