About Heilbronner Hafenmarkt

From October 2nd to 4th, 2026, Hafenmarktplatz in Heilbronn-Mitte will be transformed into the Heilbronner Hafenmarkt — one of Germany's oldest pottery markets. The tradition dates back to 1487; since 1988, it has taken place annually on the first weekend of October. Potters from all over Germany and European neighbouring countries showcase and sell household, decorative, and garden ceramics. Live demonstrations on pottery wheels are particularly popular with children — they can try their hand at the wheel themselves. Opening hours: Friday, Oct 2nd, 1–6 PM, Saturday, Oct 3rd, 11 AM–6 PM, Sunday, Oct 4th, 11 AM–6 PM. Free admission.

Germany's Oldest Pottery Market?

The Heilbronner Hafenmarkt boasts unusual historical depth: its first documented mention dates back to 1487 — making the Hafenmarkt one of the oldest documented pottery markets in Germany. The market was originally a classic craft market at the Port of Heilbronn (the original Neckar port was located here), where potters from the region delivered their goods for sale — easily transported by water, and simple to unload on land. Over the centuries, its location, frequency, and significance have changed; its current form was established in 1988, and the market has taken place annually on the first weekend of October ever since.

2026 Programme — October 2nd to 4th

The 2026 edition runs from Friday, October 2nd to Sunday, October 4th, 2026, at Hafenmarktplatz in Heilbronn-Mitte. Opening hours:

  • Friday, October 2nd: 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Saturday, October 3rd (German Unity Day): 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Sunday, October 4th: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM

At the market, potters from all over Germany as well as from European neighbouring countries (Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, France) will be present. The range includes:

  • Household items — cups, bowls, plates, jugs, pitchers
  • Decorations — sculptures, vases, wall objects, home accessories
  • Garden ceramics — plant pots, steles, birdhouses, garden ornaments
  • Unique artistic pieces — studio works by contemporary ceramicists
  • Functional ceramics — oven dishes, tagines, clay ovens

Pottery Wheels for Children

A special highlight of the Hafenmarkt: hands-on pottery wheels for children. Experienced potters help young visitors make their first attempt at the pottery wheel — a direct, tactile experience of the craft. The pieces they make can often be collected or mailed after firing. For many children, this is their first encounter with ceramics as a craft art.

Hafenmarktplatz — The Historic Location

Hafenmarktplatz is located in Heilbronn's city centre on the edge of the historic port area. Heilbronn developed into one of the most important port cities on the Neckar river since the Middle Ages — the Neckar port is still in operation today (the second-largest inland port in Baden-Württemberg), but the historic city port was integrated into the present-day city centre in the 20th century. The name Hafenmarktplatz (Port Market Square) is a reminder of this history — and makes the pottery market an atmospheric event with a historical connection to the city.

Heilbronner Hafenmarkt — edition 2026

The Heilbronner Hafenmarkt 2026 runs on Friday, October 2nd (1–6 PM), Saturday, October 3rd (11 AM–6 PM), and Sunday, October 4th (11 AM–6 PM) at Hafenmarktplatz in Heilbronn-Mitte. Potters from all over Germany and neighbouring countries present household, decorative, and garden ceramics. Hands-on pottery wheels for children. Tradition since 1487. Free admission.

2026 Programme

This year's edition, as always, combines sales, demonstrations, and interaction. Over three days, around 50–80 potters from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, and France will present their works. The variety ranges from simple everyday ware to artistic studio works — stoneware, porcelain, earthenware, Raku, salt firing, glossy clay ceramics.

Hands-on pottery wheels for children are a highlight of the weekend — experienced potters guide the young visitors in shaping their first pieces. In addition, there are live demonstrations on the pottery wheels, where adults can watch the professionals at work.
