District festival of the Remscheid Volunteer Fire Brigade – Unit 16 Hasten – with DJ party, vehicle show, and children's fire brigade at the fire station on Oberhützer Straße
Hasten belongs to the city of Remscheid, an independent city in the Bergisches Land region in southwestern North Rhine-Westphalia. With around 7,000 inhabitants, Hasten is one of the larger districts of Remscheid. Like many districts in the Bergisches Land, Hasten has a strong network of clubs and associations – a shooting club, sports clubs, a marching band, and, of course, the Volunteer Fire Brigade with its Unit 16. The fire station on Oberhützer Straße has been the brigade's meeting point for decades; once a year, a big celebration is held here.
The festival follows a fixed, two-day schedule – Friday for adults, Saturday as a family day with an evening program.
Unit 16 is one of several units of the Remscheid Volunteer Fire Brigade. It is responsible for fire protection and technical assistance in the Hasten district and surrounding areas. The brigade consists of volunteer citizens who are available for operations after their regular jobs. The fire brigade festival is not only about preserving tradition but also an important pillar for recruiting new members: children and young people get a first impression of the fire brigade's work on family day.
In the Bergisches Land region, the fire brigade festival is a unique festival culture – almost every district has a brigade, and almost every brigade celebrates once a year. These festivals foster identity: they combine tradition (vehicle show, parade), community (sausages, beer, DJ), and public service (fire safety education, children's fire brigade). The Hasten festival is a classic example of this genre.
The 2026 edition follows the established two-day format of Unit 16. On Friday evening, the brigade invites you from 8 PM for a DJ party with barbecue, beer, and socializing at the fire station. On Saturday, the extensive family program "Fire Brigade You Can Touch" opens at 3 PM with a vehicle show, fire safety education, water house, bouncy castle, children's fire brigade, and fire engine rides. From 8 PM, it transitions back into the DJ party.
Free admission. Food and drinks for purchase – proceeds benefit Unit 16.
By car via the A1 (Remscheid exit) or A46 (Wuppertal-Ronsdorf exit), then follow signs to Hasten. By train to Remscheid Hauptbahnhof, then take bus line to Hasten (Oberhützer Straße). Parking around the fire station is limited – park in the surrounding residential streets.
Admission is free on both days.
Sausages and drinks at the brigade's serving stands. Cash recommended. Proceeds benefit Unit 16.
If coming with children: Saturday afternoon from 3 PM to 6 PM is when the family program is in full swing. If you want to party: Friday evening from 8 PM and Saturday late evening. On sunny days, bring sun protection and a water bottle; most activities take place outdoors.
