Löchgau's biggest village festival with barrel tapping, live bands, fire show, and traditional well race
When the smell of bratwurst, Maultaschen, and Swabian beer wafts through Hauptstraße and Besigheimer Straße on the first weekend of July, the Hasenropferfest is back. From July 4th to 5th, 2026, the town center of Löchgau in the Ludwigsburg district becomes a festival mile for a weekend, held every two years. With around 5,700 inhabitants, Löchgau is manageable — but the festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors from the entire Stuttgart-Heilbronn region. This makes the Hasenropfer the highlight of the Swabian summer festival calendar.
The ceremonial start on Saturday, July 4th, 2026, at 5 PM, is the opening ceremony: the Musikverein Löchgau plays traditional Swabian marches, the Mayor gives the welcome speech and performs the obligatory barrel tapping with the cry "O'zapft is!" — the opening of every Swabian-Bavarian Volksfest season.
From 8:30 PM, the bands take over the stages. On the main stage, the Swabian cover band FunFacts plays classics from Schlager, Rock'n'Roll, and current hits. On the second stage, DJ Jochen Friedrich spins the decks — a mix of party hits, Discofox, and Schlager. At 9:30 PM, a spectacular fire show captivates all attention for 20 minutes: fire jugglers, fire poi, and pyrotechnics against the backdrop of Löchgau's town center.
Sunday, July 5th, 2026, is family day. The ecumenical service begins at 10:30 AM. Family attractions run all day: climbing tower, bull riding, bouncy castle, children's circus, face painting. Lunch is served by local clubs. The afternoon highlight at 3 PM: the traditional Brunnenwettlauf (well race) — a Löchgau tradition. Teams in club jerseys race around the village well with water buckets; the team with the most water remaining in the bucket wins. A fun, wet event with a large audience.
The municipality of Löchgau, with around 5,700 inhabitants, is located in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg, on the edge of Zabergäu between Stuttgart and Heilbronn. Löchgau is famous for its wine and fruit cultivation — the slopes around the town are planted with vines, and the Swabian Trollinger, Lemberger, and Riesling wines often come from the local winery. The typical Swabian-Franconian character with half-timbered houses, wells, and the baroque town church provides the perfect backdrop for a classic village festival.
The 2026 Hasenropferfest follows the traditional two-year cycle on its fixed weekend in early July. With the opening on Saturday at 5 PM by the music association, mayor, and barrel tapping, the municipality's largest festival kicks off two intensive days.
Live music is provided by the cover band FunFacts (main stage) and DJ Jochen Friedrich (second stage). The fire show at 9:30 PM has been the visual highlight for years — fire jugglers and pyrotechnics against the backdrop of the historic town center. On Sunday, the family program takes center stage, with the traditional well race as the midday highlight.

Hasenropferfest only happens every two years — if you can't make it in 2026, you'll have to wait until 2028. Bring enough small change (food and drinks are typically cash-based) and book accommodation in Besigheim or Bietigheim-Bissingen early.
