Further Information
Spring Fair in the Hardt District
The Hardter Frühkirmes is one of the annual highlights in the Mönchengladbach district of Hardt. The festival grounds on Glockenstraße transform into a colorful Kirmes mile for four days — supported by the St. Nikolaus-Bruderschaft Mönchengladbach-Hardt, a traditional marksmen's and customs organization of the district. While the Rheydter Frühkirmes (at the market in the Rheydt district) represents Mönchengladbach's major city festival, the Hardter Kirmes is the district version: more compact, more family-oriented, closer to club life.
When: May 14th to 17th, 2026
The 2026 Spring Fair runs from Thursday, May 14th, to Sunday, May 17th, 2026 — four festival days over the weekend before Pentecost. Thursday is Family Day with free admission from 10:00 AM and reduced prices at food stalls and carousels.
Family Day on Thursday
The first day is deliberately designed to be family-friendly. The Kirmes opens at 10:00 AM — a special feature, as classic Kirmes events usually don't start until the afternoon. Free admission, games, and fun for all ages. Parents bring the children to the carousel in the morning, school classes visit the Kirmes as part of a field trip program — Hardt uses Thursday as a kickoff with a targeted family orientation.
What to Expect
The classic Rhenish Kirmes with its fixed components:
- Carousels for children and adults
- Dodgems
- Shooting galleries, lottery stalls, strongman games (Hau-den-Lukas)
- Food stalls with bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), almonds
- Sweet stalls — cotton candy, fried dough (Schmalzgebäck), chocolate-covered fruit
- Ferris wheel and larger rides (depending on the mix of exhibitors)
- Festival tent of the St. Nikolaus-Bruderschaft
St. Nikolaus-Bruderschaft — Organizer
The St. Nikolaus-Bruderschaft Mönchengladbach-Hardt is a marksmen's fraternity that combines its shooting festival with the district Kirmes events. While the spring fair takes place in May, the fraternity organizes the major Hardt shooting festival later in the year. This makes the fraternity a central player in district life throughout the year.
Hardt — District in Northwestern Mönchengladbach
Hardt is located in the northwest of Mönchengladbach, directly on the forest of the same name, Hardter Wald. Approximately 11,000 inhabitants, a village character despite belonging to a large city. The Hardter Wald — an extensive forest area — is popular for walks and hikes. Visitors to the Kirmes can combine the day with a walk in the forest or in the neighboring Volkspark Mönchengladbach.
Rhenish Kirmes Tradition
In the Rhineland, the Kirmes (Kirchweih, meaning church consecration fair) has been a central district festival since the Middle Ages. In Hardt, this tradition combines with the active club life of the district — the fraternity, the fire department, sports clubs, and schools jointly support the festival. Mönchengladbach in the Düsseldorf district, North Rhine-Westphalia, with its districts Hardt, Rheydt, Giesenkirchen, Wickrath, and Neuwerk, is a city of districts — each with its own Kirmes, its own festival, its own identity.
Before the Pentecost Season
Timed for spring and the period before Pentecost, the Hardter Frühkirmes marks the start of the Mönchengladbach folk festival season 2026. Those who miss it can catch up at the major shooting festival later in the year — but Hardt in May has its very own charm: blooming trees on Glockenstraße, mild spring weather, a compact festival site.
