Munich's best-known queer street festival in the Glockenbachviertel
The Glockenbachviertel in Munich's Isarvorstadt has been considered the most important gay-queer district of the Bavarian capital since the 1980s. Bars like NY Club, Bau, Iwan, or the Edelheiss patisserie define the neighborhood around Müllerstraße, Hans-Sachs-Straße, and Ickstattstraße. This is where the Hans-Sachs-Straßenfest takes place every August – a firm institution in queer Munich since 1991.
The festival was initiated in 1991 by queer residents and local publicans to strengthen visibility and a sense of community. In the 1990s, it was still a manageable neighborhood festival, but today, with around 10,000 visitors, it is one of the largest queer street festivals in Bavaria – surpassed only by Christopher Street Day Munich. Hans-Sachs-Straße between Müllerstraße and Ickstattstraße is completely pedestrianized during the festival.
On the main stage, drag acts – often the 'Queens from Drink 'n' Drag' with lip-sync performances and spectacular outfits – alternate with DJ sets, hosted by local personalities like Tiffy Tölle and Kris Blaq. In recent years, Mr. Kosmix, DJ DavX, and DJ Sendling Grammar have played at the decks. The undisputed highlight of every edition is the 'Rosenmoment' at 8 PM: To Hildegard Knef's classic 'Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen', a rain of red roses showers down on the celebrating crowd. A magical, almost spiritual moment that produces tears, dancing, and hugs every year.
The Hans-Sachs-Straßenfest sees itself as a political festival as well as a summer party. The Munich Coordination Office for the Equality of LGBTIQ* supports the event; local publicans set up their bars outside, and bars like the NY Club provide DJ programs and refreshments. The festival is explicitly open to everyone – queer, straight, old, young, visible, or simply curious.
Free admission, open from 2 PM to 11 PM. The mood changes throughout the day: familiar and relaxed in the afternoon, increasingly exuberant and dance-oriented in the evening. If you're looking for an authentic picture of Munich's queer community, this is the place to be. The festival is also a showcase of neighborhood culture, with street food stalls, small fashion designers, and information booths from queer organizations.
On Saturday, August 15, 2026 (expected), the Hans-Sachs-Straßenfest will take place for the 35th time in Munich's Glockenbachviertel. From 2 PM to 11 PM, Hans-Sachs-Straße between Müllerstraße and Ickstattstraße will transform into a queer open-air stage.
On the program: Drag acts and lip-sync performances, DJ sets by Munich's queer artists, live acts on the main stage, and the traditional Rosenmoment at 8 PM. The festival is organized by the queer publicans and initiatives of the neighborhood, supported by the Munich Coordination Office for the Equality of LGBTIQ*.
