Hamelner Pfeifertag on June 26, 2026 — Commemoration of the Disappearance of the Children with Special Performance of the Open-Air Play
The legend of the Pied Piper is based on a historically documented event: on June 26, 1284, 130 children disappeared in Hamelin, their fate remaining unexplained to this day. Historians discuss various theories, including emigration to Eastern Europe, a natural disaster, or an epidemic. The unresolved loss continues to shape the city's collective memory.
The Hamelner Pfeifertag is the annual commemoration of these events. The city of Hamelin uses this day to convey the legend and its significance while also leveraging it for tourism.
On Pfeifertag, a special performance of the Pied Piper open-air play is given on the terrace of the Hochzeitshaus, often complemented by a festive program with music, lectures, and encounters.
The day and its associated tradition are recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. This internationally acknowledges the cultural significance of remembrance and simultaneously strengthens the legend's tourist appeal.
With the Pfeifertag, the regular Sunday Pied Piper open-air play, and the Wednesday musical RATS, the legend is a core part of Hamelin's identity. The Pfeifertag is the highlight of the annual legend program.
The Pfeifertag is the highlight of Hamelin's legend program and an occasion to engage with the historical context of the Pied Piper legend.
