When Hamburg's Companies Sail on the Außenalster

The Außenalster is not just a postcard motif and local recreation area – it is also the competition venue for the largest company sailing championship in Northern Germany. The Hamburg Company Sports Championships in Sailing take place in three stages spread throughout the year: a spring regatta, a summer regatta, and an autumn regatta. The format has been established for years and attracts teams from large Hamburg companies as well as small and medium-sized businesses.

A Regatta for Companies, Not a Professional Competition

Unlike the classic Alster regattas of the clubs, the concept of the Company Sports Association is explicitly company-oriented: it's about team spirit, sport after work, and a sporting connection between colleagues who would rarely sail together in the office. Teams of three boats per company sports club (BSG) compete – the Class O-Jolle is the racing boat, provided by the BSV.

Three Dates, One Annual Ranking

The three scoring days – mid-May, mid/late June, mid-September – feed into an annual ranking. The spring regatta also counts as a scoring event for the Hamburgiade, Hamburg's major multi-sport event for companies (May/June). Those who compete here earn double points.

On the Water and On Land

The regattas start in the morning, last several hours, and conclude with an award ceremony at the boathouse. Spectators can watch from the banks of the Alster – particularly good vantage points are Alstertwiete, Schwanenwik, and Kennedybrücke. The Hamburg-Nord district (Uhlenhorst, Hohenfelde, Winterhude) benefits from the spectacle right on its doorstep.
