Mining culture festival with ascent of the slag heap and underground mine tour
The Röhrigschacht Wettelrode is one of the last testaments to Mansfeld copper shale mining, which shaped the region for over 800 years. Today, the Mining Experience Centre operates a museum here with a real shaft tour: the hoist cage takes you almost 300 m underground, then a mine train takes you through the old tunnels — one of the most impressive visitor mines in Germany. Right next to the shaft rises the Hohe Linde, a 100-meter-high mining slag heap offering wide views over the Mansfeld region.
Once a year — usually at the end of August — the slag heap becomes the scene of a mining culture festival: the Haldenbesteigung Hohe Linde. August 23, 2026, is the next date. Guided ascents of the slag heap, lectures on the geology and history of Mansfeld mining, live music by the miners' band, a miners' meal, and of course, traditional "Glück Auf!" greetings characterize the day. Those who wish can combine the ascent with a mine tour — it will be a full day of mining.
Mansfeld-Südharz was the largest copper mining district in Central Europe. Generations lived and worked in the shafts; the language is still evident today — "Glück auf!" is not just an empty phrase here. With the closure of the last shaft in 1990, an era ended; the knowledge and tradition are kept alive in museums like the Röhrigschacht and in annual festivals.
Sangerhausen is the City of Roses — its Europa-Rosarium is the largest rose collection in the world. The mining district also shapes the city. The combination of the rose garden and the tribute to mining makes Sangerhausen an unusual destination. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Mansfeld-Südharz district, the slag heap ascent is a special experience for industrial culture enthusiasts.
The slag heap ascent is one of the most characteristic events in the Mansfeld mining region — a mix of hike, history lesson, and folk festival. The Röhrigschacht team leads the day with a program developed over years.
By car via the A38 (exit Sangerhausen-Süd), then the B85 towards Wettelrode. By train to Sangerhausen, then bus 451 to Wettelrode.
Admission to the slag heap ascent usually with a day ticket (guided ascent included). Underground mine tour at an additional cost. Tickets available on-site or by reservation.
Sturdy footwear is mandatory — the slag heap is steep. Sun hat, water, and depending on the weather, a rain jacket.
