Metal at the Castle Ruins

There are festivals that could take place anywhere — and then there is the Dark Troll Festival. Since 2009, it has gathered a dedicated community of Pagan, Folk, and Black Metal fans every May in a location that seems tailor-made for this genre: the Schweinsburg Castle Ruins in Bornstedt, a district of the municipality of Südharz in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, state of Saxony-Anhalt. The 12th-century walls tower over the valley from a hilltop — stone walls, earth ramparts, gnarled trees. A backdrop that can be more of a metal festival than any artificial stage architecture.

The musical direction is consistent: it's about the heathen, nature-connected branch of metal. Pagan Metal, Folk Metal, atmospheric Black Metal, Viking Metal, Medieval Folk. Bands like Heimdalls Wacht, Falkenbach tribute, Arkona, Wolfheart, Skyforger, or Fejd are at home on the lineup — a list that every underground metalhead reads with shining eyes. In addition, there are Barbarossa Pipes & Drums for medieval drone music between sets, campfire sessions, and a small medieval market along the castle ramparts.

With around 1,200 visitors, the Dark Troll consciously remains a small festival. No crowds, no major sponsors, no VIP areas — but an atmosphere where you meet band members by the campfire, share a beer, and discuss medieval sagas or Norse mythology. Camping is included in the ticket; many fans come in full medieval attire, others in classic band shirts and leather jackets. Both work.

Geographically, the Dark Troll is located on the edge of the Harz — that mountain range that has been considered the home of witches, spirits, and trolls in German Romanticism and mythology for centuries. The choice of the Schweinsburg Castle Ruins as the venue connects to precisely this tradition. Anyone walking along the castle ramparts at dusk on Thursday evening and hearing the first drone sound will immediately understand why this festival is no ordinary open-air event.

A Growing Underground Institution

The Dark Troll is organized by the association of the same name — a volunteer team that has been organizing it annually since 2009, without big brand names, without booking agencies. Bookings are based on the personal taste of the organizers, not on chart positions — and that's exactly what makes the program so unique. 2026 will celebrate the 15th anniversary, which is reflected in the opulent lineup: headliner slots for Falkenbach tribute (Gjallar), Arkona, Skyforger, Wolfheart, Naglfar — names that carry weight in the Pagan/Folk Metal scene.

Dark Troll — edition 2026

The 15th Dark Troll Festival is the anniversary edition — three days of Pagan, Folk, and Black Metal at Schweinsburg Castle Ruins. Confirmed lineup: Arkona, Wolfheart, Skyforger, Naglfar, Heimdalls Wacht, Fejd, Falkenbach tribute Gjallar, Frantic Amber, Ondfødt, Havamal, and many more. Approx. 1,200 spots, camping included.

The 2026 anniversary edition features an opulent lineup: Arkona (Russia) and Wolfheart (Finland) as headliners, plus Skyforger (Latvia), Naglfar (Sweden), Fejd (Sweden), and Heimdalls Wacht as the German spearhead. Special program highlight: the Falkenbach tribute set under the name Gjallar — a homage to Markus Tümmers (Falkenbach), who passed away in 2024.

Three days of festival operation at the castle ruins, camping included, medieval market at the castle ramparts, campfire sessions during the nights. Capacity remains around 1,200 spots — a conscious limitation to preserve the intimate atmosphere.
