Tradition in the Huckarde District

Dortmund, with around 600,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Ruhr area (an independent city in the Arnsberg administrative district), famous for its Borussia Dortmund, its brewing tradition, and its vibrant districts. Huckarde, a district in western Dortmund (Dortmund-West borough), has its own centuries-old fair tradition with the Pingsthuekke — the Pentecost fair on Huckarde market square. In 2026, the event runs from the Pentecost weekend, May 22 to 25.

"Pingsthuekke" — Westphalian Dialect

The name "Pingsthuekke" is Low German-Westphalian and means "Pentecost get-together" — a convivial gathering on the Pentecost festival. The term refers to the regional anchoring of the tradition in Westphalian customs. In Huckarde, the Pingsthuekke has stood for the annual Pentecost fair for decades, organized by the Dortmund-West borough administration together with the local showmen's association and the City of Dortmund.

Four Days of Festivities Over the Pentecost Weekend

The festival weekend runs from Friday afternoon to Whit Monday evening:

• Friday, May 22, 2026: Opening from 2:00 PM, official barrel tapping by the Mayor of Dortmund-West borough
• Saturday, May 23, 2026: Main visitor day with all rides and stalls
• Sunday, May 24, 2026 (Pentecost Sunday): Family Day
• Monday, May 25, 2026 (Whit Monday, public holiday): Festival concludes until 9:00 PM

Rides: Breakdancer, Amazonabahn, Bumper Cars

The range of rides is exceptionally broad for a district fair: Breakdancer (rotating thrill ride with swings), Amazonabahn (classic log flume water ride), bumper cars (a classic for all ages), children's carousel, plus a variety of smaller rides for younger children. Shooting galleries, dart throwing, dice games, and strongman games complement the skill-based attractions. Sweet stalls and snack bars (bratwurst, fries, potato pancakes, cotton candy) are scattered around the square.

Official Barrel Tapping on Friday

The official opening on Friday afternoon is traditionally performed by the Mayor of Dortmund-West borough, who taps the first beer keg. This act — a classic German folk festival ritual — is both symbolic (official festival opening) and practical (tapping the first beer in the festival tent). Citizens, club members, and the borough administration gather for the barrel tapping.

Huckarde — A District with Its Own Identity

Huckarde is located in western Dortmund between Mengede and the city center, with its own district center, a historical mining tradition (former Hansa colliery), and vibrant club life. The Pingsthuekke is an important anchor of identity for the district — a festival where residents, former Huckarde residents, and families from neighboring districts gather. Free admission ensures a low barrier to entry.
