Maritime Summer Festival on the Bodden with Zeesboot Flair
Born a. Darß lies between the Saaler Bodden and the dense Darß forest, nestled within the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park. Here, where the mainland becomes the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, the village celebrates its Hafenfest (harbour festival) once a year. The small harbour, essentially a quiet landing stage for Zeesboote and excursion cutters, transforms into a festival mile for the day, filled with atmosphere, aromas, and voices from all over Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
At the centre are the Zeesboote — the black-tarred, traditional sailing boats with their ochre sails, once used for fishing on the Bodden. They lie festively lined up at the jetty, taking guests on short trips through the shallow Bodden waters. Live music, from shanty choirs to jazz trios and pop cover bands, plays on the festival meadow and in the festival tent. The extensive supporting programme includes demonstrations by the water rescue service, boat-building showcases, and hands-on activities for children.
Market stalls line the area around the harbour, offering products from the region: smoked Bodden fish, sea buckthorn liqueur, honey from the Darß, handwoven textiles, ceramics, amber jewellery, and prints from the renowned Ahrenshoop artists' colony. The courtyard of Gut Darß also opens its gates for the festival, featuring farm and animal demonstrations, riding displays, and a farmers' market.
Born a. Darß belongs to the Vorpommern-Rügen district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The municipality, with just under 1,000 inhabitants, thrives on sustainable tourism, arts and crafts, and nature conservation. The Hafenfest is one of the few occasions when the usually tranquil harbour transforms into the pulsating heart of the peninsula for a day of celebration — and thus a perfect start to a summer holiday on Fischland-Darß-Zingst.
The 22nd edition of the Hafenfest Born combines, as usual, traditional Bodden culture with a summer family festival. Zeesboote are lined up at the jetties for admiration and rides, excursion boats offer round trips on the Saaler Bodden, and market stalls around the harbour feature specialities from Fischland-Darß-Zingst as well as regional crafts.
A highlight is the planned demonstration by the water rescue group with a boat presentation and a rescue operation demonstration. Live bands, shanty choirs, and regional musicians alternate on the stage by the harbour. Culinary delights are dominated by fish specialities, bratwurst, homemade cakes, and drinks from local producers.
The detailed programme will be published in the weeks before the festival on born-darss.m-vp.de.
Admission to the Hafenfest is free. Only food, market goods, and boat trips on the Zeesboote and excursion boats are subject to a charge (standard rates of the shipping companies).
