Two days around the Baroque harbour of the Huguenot town
The Hafenfest Bad Karlshafen is one of the most charming town festivals in North Hesse. The venue is the Baroque harbour – the urban heart of the town, which was founded in the 18th century by Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Kassel as a planned Huguenot town. The harbour, with its lock system, connects the Weser and Diemel rivers and is now a mooring for yachts, sports boats, and canoes. In 2026, the festival will take place on May 16 and 17.
With only around 3,500 inhabitants, Bad Karlshafen is one of the smallest towns in the Kassel district – and at the same time one of the most architecturally homogeneous Baroque towns in Germany. The white facades, the historic town hall, the symmetrically laid-out streets, and the central Baroque harbour form a cohesive ensemble. During the harbour festival, this ensemble becomes an open-air stage: stalls, stages, and food stands line the harbour basin.
The programme offers a colourful mix of live music in various styles, performances by local choirs, the spa orchestra, and the Helmarshausen marching band. In addition, there are arts and crafts stalls, culinary specialities, and a family programme with storytellers. On Saturday evening, the harbour will be illuminated – a visual highlight that underscores the Baroque character of the town.
Bad Karlshafen is located at the point where Hesse, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia meet, nestled in the Reinhardswald nature reserve – according to legend, the land of the Brothers Grimm and their fairy tales. In the immediate vicinity are the Weser-Skywalk, the Dreiländer-Panoramaweg (Three-State Panorama Trail), and the Krukenburg castle ruins. Visitors to the harbour festival can combine their stay with hikes, a visit to the Weser-Therme (thermal brine bath up to 36 degrees), or a boat trip.
Bad Karlshafen was founded in 1699 by Landgrave Karl as a refuge for French Huguenots. The German Huguenot Museum in the town commemorates this history. The harbour festival is part of a tradition of smaller town festivals that herald the summer season in the region around Bad Karlshafen.
Free admission. Costs only for food and purchases of arts and crafts.
By car: Take the A44 or B83 to Bad Karlshafen. During the festival, the organisers recommend additional parking at the Marie-Durand-School (access on the left side of the school building, exit "Unter dem Königsberg") and at the Helmarshausen community centre. By train: Bad Karlshafen station, from there a few minutes' walk to the harbour.
Free admission.
Saturday evening with the illuminated harbour is particularly atmospheric. If you stay longer, you can combine Sunday with a hike in the Reinhardswald or a visit to the Weser-Therme.
