Siegen and the Herrengarten

Siegen is the university city in the Siegerland (southern Westphalia, Arnsberg administrative district), with around 100,000 inhabitants and a distinct profile as a university and industrial city. The Herrengarten is a central green lung of the city center — a historic parkland on the edge of the Oberes Schloss, with old trees, manicured lawns, a pavilion, and paved paths. In summer, the Herrengarten becomes the stage for Kultur Siegen's 'Grüne Bühne' series.

Concept: Free Open-Air Culture

The Grüne Bühne is the open-air component of Siegen's Kultursommer — a deliberate initiative by Kultur Siegen to present high-quality performing arts in a low-threshold, freely accessible setting. Instead of traditional theatre halls or concert stages, artists perform in the park, with audiences sitting on benches, brought-along blankets, or simply on the grass. The programming combines acrobatics, street theatre, clowning, comedy, contemporary dance, and site-specific art actions.

June 26, 2026 — El Goma „Wonderland": Spanish clowning and visual theatre by the artist El Goma. July 3, 2026 — Dressing the City + Mein Kopf ist ein Hemd (11 am-7 pm): two performances as a day concept in urban space. July 17, 2026 — DADO „Mon Oncle le bossu": visual theatre by DADO about the hunchbacked uncle. July 24, 2026 — Line-Dance with Burning Creek: free line dance workshop and performance. July 31, 2026 — Theater PasParTout „RaTaTa, Die Rattenfanfare": spectacular-comedic street theatre. August 7, 2026 — Stadtbesetzung „Fluide Orte": site-specific art action in the city. August 14, 2026 — Monsieur und die Dame am Klavier „Hokus Pokus": piano comedy duo. Free Admission, Tip Jar

All events of the Grüne Bühne are free of charge — this is the core concept of the series. The artists are remunerated by the organizer Kultur Siegen, and a voluntary tip jar after each performance is customary and often welcome for the artists. The series is part of a municipal commitment to low-threshold cultural promotion.

Kultursommer Siegen 2026

The Grüne Bühne is embedded in the larger program 'Kultursommer Siegen 2026', which also features other venues in the city — the concert stage at Schlossplatz, the Apollo-Theater, the University of Siegen. The overall program will be published by the City of Siegen in spring 2026 and makes the summer in Siegen a dense season of cultural months.

Getting to Siegen

By car via the A 45 (Sauerlandlinie) or A 4 (Cologne-Olpe-Siegen); Oranienstraße car park within walking distance of the Herrengarten. By train: Siegen main station (RE 9, RE 16 from Cologne, Aachen; ICE on the Cologne-Dresden route), about a 10-minute walk from the main station to the Herrengarten. About 1.5 hours by train from Cologne.
