Light art, fire show, and Sunday shopping to kick off the year
The Greifswald New Year's Lights are a new city format to kick off the year in the Hanseatic city. On the first Sunday of January, the Old Town between Mühlentor and Westend transforms into a continuous landscape of light, fire, and winter between 3 PM and 8 PM. Greifswald Marketing GmbH organizes the event with support from Sparkasse Vorpommern and Stadtwerke Greifswald.
The central element is a light art trail from Mühlentor to Westend: at several stations along the shopping streets, video projections run on historic brick facades, combined with light installations. In Rubenowstraße, a dedicated LED show provides special accents.
The artist group »Flammenmeer« performs twice at Mühlentor: a smaller, child-friendly show at 3:30 PM and a grand fire show with musical accompaniment at 7:30 PM. Both performances are free of charge.
On Fischmarkt, a small winter market transforms the harbor district into a cozy village with local gastronomy and culinary specialties. In parallel, the shops in the Old Town open between 3 PM and 8 PM — a Sunday shopping event in the middle of January.
Greifswald is part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The format joins the growing series of publicly curated city events, alongside the Hanse Sail heritage and Caspar David Friedrich city history.
With the New Year's Lights 2026, the Hanseatic city is launching a new format to kick off the year. On Sunday, January 4, 2026, the Old Town between Mühlentor and Westend will transform into an atmospheric world of light from 3 PM to 8 PM.
A light art trail leads along the shopping streets past video projections on historic facades, an LED show in Rubenowstraße, and two fire shows by the artist group Flammenmeer at Mühlentor. The program is complemented by a small winter market at Fischmarkt with local gastronomy. The shops in the Old Town will open exceptionally on Sundays from 3 PM to 8 PM.
Participation in the New Year's Lights is completely free. Consumption at the winter market is at the individual prices of the stall operators.
Greifswald Main Station is about a 10-minute walk from Mühlentor and the city center. City buses regularly serve the Markt stop.
Completely free. Shops in the Old Town open exceptionally on Sundays from 3 PM to 8 PM.
Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes. The fire show at 7:30 PM at Mühlentor attracts the most visitors — arriving early secures a better spot.
